Can The Tank Water "evaporate"..... Even With The Filter On

it will create water with lots of minerals because only pure H20 evaporates and the minerals are left behind, then when you do a water change, you add more minerals to the water! Very mineral waters are usually waters with an alkaline pH and high hardness

Ok, because it looks like one of my tanks water is evaporating. Oh well, I fix that when I clean it.

Or a water change.

To tell you the truth, not really. The tanks I currently have are old, they were bought off someone about a year ago. One of them was anyway. The other one is sort of new.

The water being heated, the room being heated and lights being on for some time each day all cause a certain amount of evapouration from any fishtank that is not covered by a well fitted condensation tray.

One of my tanks has an overhead luminaire and no lid and loses on average 1" of water per week, the other has a properly fitted lid and loses none.

It is always best to do a water change even a small one and then top up the water rather than continuously topping it up as all of the chemical components in the water simply become more and more concentrated over time that way.

yeah i have that too, one of my tanks the hood doesn't quite fit snugly so I loose a fair bit, I tend to top up a little bit twice weekly and then do a small water change once a week (before one of the top up's).

:)

Oh, ok. But can someone tell me how to do a water change. Iv'e done one before, but i'm positive I did it wrong. Don't bother asking me how I did it because I can't explain it  .

take water out somehow and put fresh water back in.

this is often done with a hose syphon. You stick a hose in the water and suck on the end of it until water comes close to your mouth then put your thumb over the end of the hose and stick it out a window or into a bucket. As long as the end of the hose is lower than the water level of the tank the water should drain out. drain out around 20% of the water then refill it with fresh water.

EDIT: I forgot to add that you need to add water conditioner to the water at some point.

wouldnt agitation make water evaporate faster?

Yes it would, not least because agitated water has a larger surface area. Whether the difference would be noticable or not though, is another question and not one I can answer.
