Evening folks! Ive just took two slightly emaciated Apistos off a friend. They are eating well now and getting their colour back, but I am unsure of what sex they both are! The fish in the first picture is about 6cm long and the fish in the second picture is about 4cm. Any ideas?! Im guessing they are about a year old.

If you apply the stock rule for dwarf Cichlids then it looks as if the top is male and the bottom is female.

Hi there,

Something else to look for with aggie's > only the males will show patterning in the caudal (tail) fin.

And yes, male top, probable female on the bottom

As a word of warning when you sex these guys (and this is one of the things I don't like with aggie's), it is possible to have 'sleeper' males. Essentially a sub dominant male will take on the appearance of a female so that it does not have to deal with the aggresion of the dominant male (just when you're sure, this sort of thing happens)

Thanks for that Andrew! The male isn't exactly overly fond of the female just now but its not a major problem. Once Ive got my planted 22Gal on the go they will hopefully settle.
