Can Rainbowfish be in this Forum

>>> So is it going to be called Cyprinids, Characins and Rainbowfish?

Don't know, as I said, I have put the idea up on the mod board. To follow the naming so far adopted, it should be "Cyprinids, Characins and Atherins". Leave it with me for a week or so, I am not sure who is around right now, I just got back from a trip myself a day or so back.

Melanotaenia praecoxis that the latin name for rainbow fish?

Melanotaenia praecox is the scientific name for Dwarf or Neon Rainbowfish. However, there are several more species with other scientific names.

It was a dwarf I was looking at ,

nice fish.

They really are nice, and they get much more blue on the bodies than that. You can see in that pic how easy they are to sex as well. The one in the front of the frame with the red fins is a male. In the background you can see a female with the yellow/orange fins. Because the females are also colorful, they are easy to find, unlike the drab females of some other rainbowfish species.

Cichlids are a very large family, for example, and are in the category, cichlids.
Danionins are a large group, but you don't see me asking for
a special forum to discuss them in do you!

I am in full agrement that rainbowfish need to be included here.
Aren't they in the cyprinid family? I guess rainbows should go here, they are pretty similar to the others :D

Thanks to L.L. for looking into this for us. I have been posting rainbowfish stuff in trop chat because I didnt know where they should go. Now all the rainbow owners can post here for rainbow specific stuff. :)

As you may have noticed, this board is now called Cyprinids Characins and Atherinids!

Hadn't noticed , it but I have now
Right what is an Atherinids fish?

Just put it in google it came up with..

Athreriniform Fishes, Rainbows, Silversides, Blue-eyes and More

so Atherinids covers a wide range really.(Or am i wrong)?

Yes, it refers to the family Atherinidae which include the genera for Rainbows. There are a few other genera but these are rarely seen in the hobby, Blue Eyes crop up from time to time, though sadly not as often as they used too - nice little things.

The Silversides are marine fish so would be on the marine boards.
