So one of patients here got a platy fish as a gift.  It was brought in what seems to be a cup. I know to start with that thing is too small for any kind of fish, I think even for fry. But I kept telling the mother that the fish would die if they didn't put all those things tanks need, and well the need of a bigger tank and the cycling. But she kept insisting that the fish didn't need such things. Can platys live like that?

I don't think so but I'm not even 100% positive on it. Personally I think it's inhumane for the fish. I don't even like betta's in those little containers.

I also think its inhuman to have them there but not 100$ sure if they can live in those conditions.

No, you are quite right they cannot live in their. Certainly not long term!

I'm going to assume you have a fish tank? Why not take the platy off your patient and rehome it in your tank, Maybe showing them pictures of what you have so they know it's going to a good home?

It's sad when people don't realize that fish are just as alive as we are, and have needs to thrive properly.  Sure, a fish may survive in a cup (for a short while), but they certainly aren't thriving.

You could actually go without the filter as it only acts as a medium for the bacteria to grow. Though it's still a pain in the arse to have to do WC's multiple times a day. Tropical fish AT LEAST need a heater. And if you're not going for a filter you need something to oxygenate the water even if you have a betta.

Well my platys had all the things needed. But well this woman is stubborn. I cant fit it on my tank and well i will be in hospital for at least 3 more weeks. But yeah.....the little girl will be going home tomorrow. I hope by then they have some bigger thing to keep fish and in conditions needed.
