Hi guys!

Just got my first tank and it is sat in my bedroom full up but fishless!

My question is:

I have an HJ-311B multi-function fully submersible filter and pump as shown below

(I am using a small tube out the front with a nozzle on top, connecting to a long pipe sucking in air. Pushed out the end/second nozzle, not the big black thing shown connected above)

I am quite happy with the buzzing noise of the filter but the bubbles are a little loud and i would like to keep the filter running without them.

Is there anyway i can unplug the air tube which goes out of the tank, yet leave the filter running? Will this push the water around ok without the noisy air bubbles?

Also if that is not possible, can i bend/bulldog clip the air intake tube to allow much less bubbles?

It came with no instructions sadly

I would really appreciate some help as i can sleep witth the bubbles going and i hear turning it off at night kills bacteria and fish!

So in brief:
Can i unplug the air tube from the multifunction device?
Can i bend the air tube to slow down air suction and lessen noise?
Is turning off at night a terrible idea?

Help please!

Thanks
Rob

Hi Rob and welcome to TFF!

Hopefully someone with direct experience of this filter or something very close to it will come along and further support what I'm about to say...

In general we get pretty many comments about internal filters of that sort than have in some way the option of running extra bubbles of air. In all the cases I've heard of its an option and works fine without the extra bubbles. It should be pretty easy for you to just stick your hand in the tank and judge the flow strength with the bubbles flowing and then disconnect or remove the apparatus that makes the bubbles, fire it up without that and then put your hand in again and judge the strength of the water flow stream without the bubbles.

Any filter that is going to circulate water adequately in the tank is going to create a significant flow somewhere that you can feel. Its important to work on having the output flow directed such that it accomplishes some significant surface water movement, which promotes gaseous exchange (both O2 and CO2.) Bubbles are not a significant contributor to O2 exchange, so you don't have to worry about that aspect.

I have that same kind of air eductor on some of my internal filters. The air hose is not needed unless you want it. I simply remove them and let water be brought in through the top opening instead of air. It works just fine that way.
