A lot of it depends on the species of shrimp your planning to keep... Have a look at the UKshrimp species profiles for the preferred conditions of the shrimp you will be getting.

For the more common species (Cherry shrimp and crystal reds) I would go for lots of moss, some java fern and some bog wood for decoration. Its what I have :D

Substrate isn't too important, just don't use anything that will affect the pH like coral sand or the special Cichlid substrates.

The best filters to use in a shrimp tank tend to be air powered sponge filters as they wont suck in baby shrimp, but i use a internal power filter in my tank (Elite Stingray) and haven't had any problems. You can use an external filter without problem, you just need to cover the intake with an old pair of tights or a inlet sponge.

As for breeding them it is either extremely easy for those that breed in fresh water (like Cherry Shrimp) or stupidly hard for those that need marine water when young (like Amano Shrimp).

Here is a pic of my tank when i first set it up... there is a lot more moss in there now :good:

thankyou shrimper, that tank is exactly how i would have done it to be honest ( all my faves in there) shall have to re think the filter tho as ive just been given a fluval 1+ for the tank, tho it has a ug filter, will that be any good?.. tho saying that i have noooooo idea how a ug filter works ( cycling i mean) so that there are no traces of ammonia or nitite, so im prob safer sticking to a small internal like you have suggested :)
ill be reading that link too :good:

Hi shel this is what my shrimp tank looked like ...now it holds a betta but hey lol

As for the ug filter i think the substrate has to be a certain depth for them to work correctly and even then i dont really think they are sufficient just on there own in any tank really.

I would probably go for the internal filter rather than the under gravel... from what i've read under gravel filters aren't that great and as shrimp have ways of finding their way into places they shouldn't be you will probably find some living under the gravel tray.

If the fluval is adjustable I would turn it down as low as possible, there is less chance of the babies being sucked in. :good: If it looks like babies are getting sucked in you can put a stocking over the filter and disguise it with moss.

There is a guide on the site to setting up a shrimp tank on uk shrimp i probably should of linked to as well  Its in the articles section.

the fluval 1+ isn't adjustable but you can easily tie some tights round it or section off a corner of the tank if you have some acrylic lying around

i have used a fluval 1+ and a stingray in my shrimp tanks
and always had lots of baby shrimps

gee jen thats a sexy lil number

ill have a go with the fluval then see how i get on i spose :good:

thanks shrimper for all the advice, im sure ill be back for more ;)

off to find that set up article now :)

ohh looking at the pics ( fone pics) im gutted cos it looks naff :( spose it will look a little better with more plants in

It looks a lot better than my tank did when I first got it running.

The amanos may eat the moss. I think Liam said that his did.

My suggestion is to add some leaves and twigs.

what type of leaves and twigs.. i saw some indian something leaves on ebay are they suitable?

also what are they doing when they are stamping their feet, look really funny ,just wondered what it was all about and that its ok

thanks tyler

It's Riccia fluitans hun, them leaves your on about are indian almond leaves... i would imagine they wouldnt be a problem adding tbh. Tanks looks really good aswell keeps us posted with pics :).

Looks one hell of a lot neater then my tank, not that that is a challenge to accomplish . My amanos don't eat moss they just eat the algae and the micro-organisms that live on and around the moss in my tank to clarify that. They are also weird characters with quite distinct personalities one of mine seems to think its a crab some of the time and walks around sideways.....
