Can I Put A South American Puffer In A Community Tank?

Yeah thanks for that poopysdrew, the tank isn't overstocked and like you said, you're a beginner so maybe you should'nt go throwing statements around. The point with discus was that people shouldn't be so aggresive in their posts, i was asking advice on a specific subject, i wasn't asking for unjustified criticism which is what i got. If you feel so strongly about hostility on this site i'm suprised you can't see why discus's attitude offended people.

I dont know why everyone is bashing discus do much...i read the whole thread and yea discus you could have stated it more politely but honestly, i am pretty new to the hobby and when i read all the types of fish he had in his tank i thought, "wow that sounds really overstocked" I am getting a 50 gallon soon and dont even think i will be keeping balas because they will eventually outgrow it. I understand he will be moving them when necessary but isnt the tank already overstocked and mismatched with fish? And as for discus making a mistake, who cares? discus admitted she was wrong. I really like this forum and just dont understand all the hostility sometimes? I hope i havent offened anyone and as stated earlier i am new so feel free to give any criticism you would like... :good:

The whole thing was becuase it was someone asking a question specifically targetted at the Puffer, if someone isnt sure or possibly mistaken then really they shouldn post the asnwer as it could a) cost someone money for a fish that is totally unsuitable, B) cause chaos in their current tank c) Possibly put a fish in the complete wrong environment or all of the previous etc.

Puffers are imo one of a group of serious specialty fish that should only be kept by experienced people so need exact, specific and correct info without any dubiaty.
I see your point, i just was trying to understand why all the hostility. I hope i didnt offend you or anyone else as i am not looking for a fight or enemy, you need as many knowledagble friends as you can get in this hoppy :good: c ya

lol ok then when was i "Agressive" ? ..

We all make mistakes. and i got it mixedup with a ceylon puffer. as far as the stocking goes im helping the owner sort out his tank. before he has fish that cant turn round..

It's not a goldfish bowl it's a decent sized tank, the 9 fish are all tiny and frankly look lost in there at the mo.Also, they all get along great. The point is i am well aware they will outgrow the tank, eventually, i really don't need telling that. I was after some views on wether there is a puffer that would live harmoniously in this tank while they are all young, with a view to the bigger fish evantually moving out, I was hoping to hear from people who have a puffer in a community tank.

Anyway, I've decided to buy another tank probably around the 30-40 gallon mark to house a puffer or a community of puffers. If there is anyone who knows what they are talking about who would like to advise which FRESHWATER puffers would be a good choice i would be glad to hear their views.
I personaly don't have a puffer tank, but I'm converting my 36 gallon in a SAP tank. I found so much info on this forum and on google that helped me determine to get them. I think SAPs would look awesome in a 30-40 gallon! They are fin nippers so if you want to put other fish with them ,then they have to be quick swimmers. :D I'm putting about 4 of them in my 36 gallon (as advise by people on this forum) and mabe some zebra plecos. Well I'll let someone who is more experienced with puffers answer more questions for you, I just thought I would give you a friendly shout out. :D
P.S I hope you find what you're looking for

i had a figure 8 puffer in a tank with a silver shark, 4 red phantom tetras, a pleco and 2 flying foxes and my puffer was a darling. didnt bother anyone or anything. i got rid of him recently as he was unhappy because of the fact he needs salt.. well to cut my story short lol i now have 2 red eyed puffers and 4 dwarf puffers n everybody gets on fine. so y dont u try having a look at some red eyed puffers? and about the south american puffers, they are supossed to be the most peaceful pufers. there is stil a chance (as with all puffers) of fin nipping and so on.. but they are 'ment' to be the most peacefll ones.. so have a look at sum south american ones and try do sum reearch on red eyed puffers n see what you think (all the puffers i have mentoined apart from my figure 8 are fresh water btw) hope that helps you a little bit :)

its more helpful then me tellin you that your tank is to smaal right? :p

Im new to this site n I was reading the thread, I guess Discus made a mistake, but I think he was just trying to help.
Regardless if his help was useful or not, I think his/her intention was to help the guy.
Can we just all get along :) its not like the guy asking will just listen to 1 advice. Peace.

Truck I dont think you made it clear  . This thread is over 2 years old!! I think Discus has finished crying into his keyboard by now x

The one thing I haven't seen anyone say is South American Puffers are the most likely to need their teeth trimmed - meaning they aren't fish for the lazy fishkeeper.

If you're able to find a fish vet, and/or have the guts to anesthetic them and clip their teeth yourself, you should be okay though. Always scared me off of them however.

ac106,

You say that you have never seen Clown Loaches as big as 12 inches, well there is a fish shop in Eping, Eseex who sells what they call super sized Clown Loaches which are up to 18 inches.
