my dad has returned from the caribean and has brought me back quite a few pieces of rock. its "old coral" im unsure whether i can place them in my tropical setup due to possibe buffers and variations in ph, gh and kh.

Any advise would be very welcome

-I can definitely see it skewing your water parameters pretty severely.
-Also, since it is so porous it might get covered in stubborn algae/dirt and that will be a nightmare to remove!
-Since they are so 'soft' (in mineral terms), any slight acidity in your water will probably eat away at them.
-The oxymoron of coral in a visibly freshwater tank also bothers me.

Would look great on a shelf or something though :)

If you use the coral, be sure to clean it well first to remove any salt that has been deposited inside the porous surface of the coral. You can expect it to move the pH and hardness of your tank water up somewhat, but maybe not too badly, between water changes. If you already have rather hard and high pH water, it probably won't affect it very much.

tbh honest with you my initial thought to placing the coral in my tank was:

a) it would look out of place
b) It may affect my ph
c) May alter my hardness

I just thought id ask on here to be sure because my dad got back from cuba today and hed personally collected these from the beach there with me in mind.

I think ill keep them for when i get my marine setup

oh one more question..will the coral be dead or may it spring back to life in a marine setup?

i guess it would affect the water...so personaly i wouldnt use it inside any of my tanks purely because i wouldnt like to kill any of my fish :), but can we see a picture of it?

From my rudimentary, discovery-channel knowledge of corals, It won't 'spring back to life' of its own accord, but if you put it in with similar corals perhaps polyps will take up residence inthe 'skeleton'. Just a guess. Definitely won't come alive again tho.

EDIT: Might make a good decoration in a FOWLR tank too!
