If I got a male and 2 females to breed, could I keep them in my 5 gallon until they get the nest and eggs going, and then after the fry hatch could I put the 2 females and male back into my 30 gallon with my other fish? I have a powerhead, would that current stress them out?

I have

Tiger Barbs
Bala Sharks
Blue Gouramis
Red Velvet Swords
Red Belly Pacu

The only ones im worried about is the Barbs, theyre bad fin nippers :/

IMO definately not. I had a Betta that was literally overnight eaten alive by a pair of Golden Barbs.

Know what i put my betta in our 20 gallon tank. We have danions and barbs, the barbs do nip once in a while, but keep to themselves mainly.

Chances are any fish youput in with a betta will chew on the fins of the betta. IME the only fish taht go well with them with little to NO problems are gold fish. those long fins are just invatations to fishies looking to nip fins. I STRONGLY suggest not housing them with other community fish especially if you want to try to breed them.

Also, to breed them they must be seperated prior so male can build a bubble nest. In larger size tanks this can be imposs. and with other fish chances of ther male making a nest are slim.

I have tried to breed them before and learned over the course. Finally I decided to stick with the Victorians. So what if they are mean and need tons of tanks. LOLOLOL

Here is a GREAT site that is strictly Bettas. there is alot of good tips and stuff on breeding / keeping / housing / feeding, everything you can think of.

Good Luck,

I disagree, at least to some extent, in relation to keeping fighters in a community. I happily kept one in a widespread mixed aquarium several years ago, although made the rookie mistake of mixing it with barbs.

Nevertheless, the fighter recovered & I found it to live just fine with plecs, silver & red-tailed sharks, neon & glowlight tetras, bronze & glass catfish, & several other species.

Punk, if you do want to mix a fighter in a multi-species community, just make it a point to ask your local dealer what fish it is & isnt compatible with, as many will in fact tear it apart.
