I am not new to fish keepin, infact i work in an aquatic store but am looking to keep an oscar. I have a 180 ltr. juwel tank and have removed the internal juwel filter as they ar crap and placed an external on there. I was just wondering what your oppinions are as to keeping a single oscar with four larger angels and corrys. I will buy the oscar very small (around 1-2 inches) and the corrys are quite large. As i am introducing the oscar as a small fish i dont forsee a problem as i have sucessfully kept a giraffe cat with shoals of neon tetras and the cat was around a foot in length!!!

Just some oppinions please

Thanks

I don't think that tank's anywhere near big enough for an adult oscar, mine 350l and that's the recommended miniumum size for one oscar alone, I'm still gonna try and upgrade my tank when he's adult size.

And no he will eventually eat the angels and the cory's. they're not suitable tank mates. Many Oscar's will be fine with a variety of fish for the first yr or so, when they start to reach adult size they're personalities can change and they can turn on fish they've lived happily with for years.

So no I really wouldn't recommend it unless your gonna get a much bigger tank and think of some more suitable companions for him.

:/

I agree with Miss Wiggle, Oscars can be nasty brutes when adult. Your tank would be ok for a female as they are smaller than males, but sexing babies is impossible. If you wanted a medium cichlid, keep something like Green Terrors or Jurupari's.

A GT can be the same if not more aggressive than an oscar. I say the tank isn't big enough for an oscar aswel.

I say crack on mate. You can always upgrade your tank at a later date or remove some fish should problems or overcrowding occur. Just the same as everyone else on here will no doubt do at some point or other. Good luck iwth it bud. Pete

hmm this could be irresponsible advice. rehoming large oscars can be hard to do. dont buy large fish on the assumption that people will be queing up to take them when they outgrow your tank.

Upgrading a tank to fit an large Oscar is a fine idea. A 4ft by 1.5 by 1.5 is fine for one with a plec or doradid tank mate.

Had an Oscar given into the aquatic centre i was doing working at a couple of years ago... It ate all its tank mates (from its household home) and kept destroying any plants within its path. (totally wrecked the tank it was placed in at work)

yup, i think an Oscar would be struggling in that tank within a year. can you absolutely 100% guarantee that within a yr you'll be able to buy and run a bigger tank and you'll have room for it?? If not it's a pretty bad idea to get an O.

There's lots of medium sized cichlids you could have in that tank though. I'd have a look through the fish index at new world cichlids, sure you'll find plenty of things you like.
