Indeed, the tails are cropped by breeders to make them 'pretty', not a very nice practice IMO.

Also the fish are not going to die of shock if acclimatised properly to the new pH level. Ideally the pH should be fairly high, though through being bred and acclimatised in lower pH waters fish are used to it.

If acclimitized properly yea.. but some people just float the bag in the tank for 20 mins, then dump the fish in, assuming the water is the same..

If their water is at 7 and the store actually keeps the africans at 7.8, the fish will most likely die of shock.
