Can I Have An Apple Snail In A Planted Tank?

yes you can, make sure you get a brigs, the smaller ones they only eat very soft fruit and veg and maybe the odd leaf, the much prefer algae, the other common type are canas and they will eat the whole tank, i think you can only get browns though, brigs come in yellow, ivory, blue, pink, purple etc

50/50 some will not touch plants others will make a break for them :shifty:

People say yes or no are both incorect it seems to be up to snail as crazy as it sounds. At the moment i have about 100 apples in planted tank with no damage the other tank they destroyed over night

It took a canas snail a few hours to eat everything in a heavily planted 4ft tank I once had (P. canaliculata come in a range of colours from apple snail brown/green to apple snail gold). Apple snails, on the other hand, are completely fine, if you make sure to feed them. They may attempt to have a go at the plants if they're starving, but they'd always go for algae pellets and vegetables first.

yes i had a cana once, and one of my large leafed plants had half a leave missing, i thought there was a rabbit in there or soI mething, they are all apple snails kat, p. cana and p. brigs I there they are a few other too spixi is one ive heard of, Its to do with the size of the snail and the teeth, cana can munch through most tough leaves, whereas brigs cant they may eat soft thick leaved plants and again their appitite is a lot less too.

[…] they are all apple snails kat, p. cana and p. brigs I there they are a few other too spixi is one ive heard of […]
I'm still working on the common names which were common 5-10 years ago around UK forums, where apple snails were P. bridgesii, cana/canas were P. canaliculata, spixi were Asolene spixi, etc. Just goes to show how inaccurate it is to use common names in the first place

i know its all very confusing, canas and brigs and spixi are all types of apple snails or mystery snails they call them in the states, i used to mod on applesnail.net.
trouble is its largely american. di
