ive been maturing my 120g with my angels(cycled new filter tru established 50)the tank ig going along nicely
ph 7.1
amonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 10ppm
i have gravel in there at the moment but i intend on having the tank for discus only and they love to dig in the substrate can i change to sand when i do a water change if the sand is really well rinced with the fish still in or will it stress them out to much?

I moved all of my fish into a seperate container with the tank water in it, heated, with the same filters. Then I took out the gravel and put the UNRINSED playsand in there... put the rocks and plants back it, then the filter, then the fish. The tank was veryveryvery cloudy from the sand but the fish don't mind. There color lightens a little bit though. It took about 3 days to completely clear up. Only two casualties - 2 platies that jumped out of the holding tank. -_-

If you have discus, maybe it would be best to get a bunch of 20g rubbermaid containers and put all of the fish in those...

It only took me about an hour. That was my 29g.

i changed my substrait pretty much the same way but with 160l of water to store while i did it i was a little lost till i realized that a £10 plastic bin from b&q etc etc will hold 80l so 2 of those to transfer the water into, one with the heater & the fish in, then the other when syphoning the water into the 2nd bin i sucked up as much gravel as poss (saves me routing around scratching glass to get the bulk of the fravel out) i knew this would make that water a little murky so connected the filter to this bin to help the water clear up. i then put the sand which i had rinsed for all of 5 mins (more like sand into a bucket fill with water swirl 4x drain water and put sand in tank making it all nice and level) then put most of the water from 1st bin with fish in into the tank leaving enough for the little guys in the bottom of the bin while i xfered the 2nd bins water back to the tank. re cnnected heater and filter then added fish and topped up with a litte fresh water to a slightly cloudy tank, when i woke up te next morning everything had settled and the filter had done its job and the tank was nice n clear.

1 week later i found out that not only did i have some nice fish but they were great landscapers too !!! esprcially the kribs they have moved the sbstrate around left right and centre, its funny watching them both pop out the side of a log, take a quick look around and spit the sand out then dive back in and suck up more sand. if i didnt know better i would have thought they were trying to make a prison break by tunneling their way out and disposing of the dug up sand outside while no one was looking. i wish i could hire a landscaper that did as much as they do and as well.

I think you should be able too ,but you'll want to turn off the lights to lower the fishes stess level. They probably have a better idea then i do since ive never changed my tanks substrate at all. Its up to you! :good: :flex:

thanks for that ive got 2x 100L black rubbish bins with a handy bung at the bottom real handy cus im guna use them for my water changes also changing 25% of a 120g tank by 2g bucket load is not my idea of fun ive got small submursable pump to transfer with i think when ive got sand fully washed ill take advise given and put them in one of the bins wif heater etc while i do the substrate transfer.its black sand so should show of the discus beautifully im gettin a digital camera 4 my birthday so ill be able to post picks soon
