Can I Add A Baby Dolphin Soooooo Cute!?

no its like a elephant nose but looks like a dolphine that is small. about 7cm long! very cute £5 :hyper:
i think i may take my knife fish back he is a brown one.

x

just cos he's small now doesn't mean he won't get big, they mostly sell juvenile fish in fish shops so you might think they're small, but they're not gonna stay that way.

is he plain brown or does he have any spots or anything like that on him? either way though it may well be best to return him too.

have you read what i posted before about cycling, that's about the single most important thing to learn about fishkeeping so make sure you understand it. :)

As I said, it's a mormyrid. Here's the Fishbase page with pictures of most of the species:

http://www.fishbase.org/identification/spe...0&areacode=

The "baby whales" I've seen are usually species of Pollimyrus, such as P. castelnaui, and less often species of Mormyrus and Marcusenius.

Regardless, these are ONE TO A TANK, and cannot be mixed with other species (i.e., you can have ONE elephantnose OR ONE baby whale but not both). They are territorial and aggressive when kept in small groups (in the wild they live in schools of hundreds).

i think the dolphin you are talking about is

Blue Dolphin Cichlid (Cyrtocara moorii)

you can see it if you click on this link....... Dolphin Cichlid

Well it should be easy enough for a beginner to tell a cichlid from a mormyrid!

[1] Is it like a normal fish in shape, and blue = Dolphin cichlid.
[2] Is it bizarre with a stumpy body, round head, thin tail, and grey/brown = Baby whale mormyrid.

Cheers, Neale

I think she's talking about a baby dolphin a/k/a a freshwater dolphin not a baby whale as they are two seperate fish species but both connected to the mormyrid family.

-Elephant Nose has a long nose (chin actually (
-Baby Whale has no nose
-Baby Dolphin's are inbetween with a stumpy nose

I have one similar to the baby dolphin called a mormyrid caballus. Mine is blind as a bat so you have to put bloodworms right under his nose. Apart from that he feeds well and chases any other fish that come near his grub.

...

The problem with these silly common names is exactly what we're seeing here... no-one knows precisely what's being talked about. I've seen "baby whale" and "baby dolphin" applied to the same fishes and to different fishes, and even multiple species in a single batch of fish all called the same thing!

I have no idea why people use obscure common names for oddball fish, or African cichlids, or L-number catfish, or really anything others than bread-and-butter community fish. All they do is muddy the waters. It would be much better if everyone just used Latin names, especially the retailers!

Can`t believe the fish shop sold you these fish without giving you advice,if he sold them you all at once and said they`d be ok, he/she`s a bad naughty fish shop  just wants to line his pockets :big_boss:

It's not April 1st is it????? I'm sure a lfs could not be this stupid..... Couldn't be a couple of students being cleaver "fishywishy" asking about "Dolphy wolfy, Soooooooooooooo Cuty" could it? students do dumb things when bored.

Wow, you really overstocked your tank. I can't believe the fish store didn't question you about buying all of those fish! Did they tell you about the Nirtogen Cycle either? If your tank is three weeks old and hasn't been cycled you should expect a big loss in fish and a BIG spike in ammonia like others have already said. You should really think about taking some more fish back to the store. It's not totally your fault though. Your lfs should have really told you about cycling, fish rules of thumb, and good starter fish. Where do you go by the way? I always go to the local petco because they reccomend great things and tell you about everything.
