Im wondering wether fish can be in love because i have a male and female platy whom ive named Jack and Vera(coronation street)and they dont leave each others side. They swim round happily together all day long and have 3 fry which they tend to look after. They look like a little family in their underwater world. Has anyone else had anything like this?

hi i have two red wag platy, who paired off from the start he wont let any one close to her,
he is not agressive to her in any way,i have other platy but these 2 were just meant to be  .

Platies are extremely social fish, and it seems clear that they do have preferences as to individual friends. Perhaps not love in our sense, but definitely companionship.

i dont think anyone can really answer this, but i dont see why not. it's like any other emotion, they're attached to each other for some reason or another. :)

I'm with CBTF. I've had two male bettas that really enjoyed each other's company. When one got sick and died, the other nearly died as well. I could tell he really missed the other fish.

Cute! I have a pair of Platys like that. They do seem to pair off. It seems to work like a wolf or dog pack. There is a Alpha fish and her mate. Which would be my HUGE platy and her mate. They are the only ones who mate, although the 4 have mates. They all take turns guarding the fry from the Danio. It is so entertaining. It was so funny, I was watching the fry being guarded my a pair while the other played and all off the sudden all of them came over, the 2 left and a new pair guarded. LOL! It was like the changing of the guards. Too funny!!!!! Maybe I have a weird bunch of platys? Fish are more entertaining than people think!

What other fish do you have in the tank? Danio usually don't do well with Guppies if you have any in the tank. How big is your community tank?
They do breed, but they eat the eggs and fry right away. Danios might pester other fish sometimes. If you keep them in schools of 6 or more they should pester within there own little school. Mine swim around, chasing eachother all day. LOL
