long story -basically I was forced to take in some sick fish kept in filthy water that came with a cheap tank. Put them in with mine (big mistake!) as I had nowhere else to keep them and it was after 10pm. Now I've been advised to treat my tanks with anti finrot and anti bacterial medicine and add salt as a precaution to stop my own fish catching nasty diseases like finrot from the newwcomers. Problem is my livebearers tank also has some baby bristlenoses 1.5 - 2inches long? Will they be OK if I add salt and meds to tank?

I doubt it, they are from fast flowing parts of the Amazon river, I am sure more knowledgable members will post soon enough to confirm or otherwise...

Why the salt when you have the meds in there anyway?

No leave the salt, and instead raise the temp gradually to around 28-30C and increase the aeration in the tank, (adding an air pump or raising the filter to above the waterline will do)

Do you have any idea what disease the sick fish have? I mean salt, and two treatments is a bit OTT for most diseases unless you have all sorts of problems. Presuming its just finrot then just treat with a broad spectrum treatment like Myxazin,

OK no salt/ I was advised to add it to livebearers tank as a precaution. Basically I put an angel from the filthy tank in there which died after a few hours, not sure why as it had no obvoius signs of disease though I must admit I didn't examine it too closely as it was late and I was tired. Angel may have had bacterial infection and goodness knows what else-its former tankmates have finrot and possible whitespot. Someone suggested Old Tank Syndrome -the shock of being moved to a clean new tank proved too much for the angel. Lost a guppy and a platy a few days after (not sure if this was just a coincidence) and started to panic.Hoever, not had any more deaths and all my own fish seem fine with healthy appetites. Should I medicate as a precaution or leave well enough alone? Can't remove baby BN from this tank as I have nowhere else to put them since I was forced to take in 6 fish including a large plec and 2 large gourami with bad finrot at short notice.
