My UV is 145 gallons per hr and the fluval canister is 180 gallons per hr , so, basically, the sterilizer wont do that well cuz of the gphs are way off, rite?

To work, the pathogens in the water need to be exposed to the UV light. If your water is zipping through the unit fast enough, there is the risk that some will escape their otherwise irradiated fate. That said, they run the same risk next time through, and the next. There will always be a few that manage to get through many times without receiving a fatal dose. There are also people that win lotteries.

The difference in flow rates of your units is within tolerance, I wouldn't worry about it. Unless you have a specific need, UV's are un-necessary anyway.

well i need 1 cuz i have murky water

If by murky you mean green, then yeah you canjust run it off of pretty much anything. The water-borne algaes that cause green water die with just about any contact time with a UV sterilizer.

Although if you have green water it might be worth addressing why you have it (the cause) rather than just treating the free floating algae (the symptom).

If the GPH is too much for the UV, then you can use a powerhead and buy some hoses and clamps to secure it to the pump/powerhead.
