This fishy was sold to me as a Molly, and judging by the head shape it very well could be, but I'd just like some other opinions

I know the pictures aren't the best but i hope someone can tell :p

Looks like a molly aswell as a platty but not to sure

It's almost twice the size of my platy;s. It's about 2-2.5 inches  The head shape is Molly, but then the tail is Platy I think, but then again the only molly's I've ever had were Lyretail so I associate rounded tails with Platys..

I reckon it's a molly - you don't just get lyretail mollies.

Just a molly I think! A not very black Black Molly

mollys and platys look almost the same, but if it was sold as a molly, i would say chances are good that it is one.

I've had dalmation mollies in the past and they didn't look like this one...

I did, however, have a batch of platy fry that I raised and had one had that same blueish/grey colouring. You don't normally find blue mollies but you can get blue platies.

The best way to tell is to look at the mouth because platies and mollies have slightly different mouths. The molly will usually have bigger lips, a mouth that protrudes more, especially the bottom lip which sticks further forward than the top - lips are quite thick compared to a platy and the mouth is wide with a straightish edge when viewed from above. Platy's have more of a pointed face, narrower mouth and lips are not as prominent as a molly. Mollies often have larger eyes than a platy, too.

Are you able to post a clearer photo of its head as those pics are a bit blurry?

Regards, Athena

I have three Dalmation Mollies just like this, including two more black and white than spotted if you will. I wasnt aware from the ones ives seen in Cumbria Mollies should have lyre tails?

i cant tell. It does almost look like a female swordtail. do they come in black?
