Can Anyone Id This Please?

Found this on mod queue in the FAQ. Moved.

I can't see the picture.

Here's your pic

I'm quite certain that's a L091 Leporacanthicus Triactis - Three Beacon Catfish. (Here's an article with some photos). Albeit not the "normal" markings as it's probably very stessed and trying to camouflage itself. They usually hide 99% of the time and I bet that photo was taken almost immediately after putting it into the tank. Or it doesn't have any caves to hide in. They are usually a very deep charcoal with vivid markings on the three tips.

Here's a pic of mine - also shortly after I put it into the tank - hence the ligher colours. But when it's in hiding, it's near pitch black.

Edit: on second thought - could you get a better picture of the fins. It looks as though yours has some markings on the fins too - which (to my knowledge) is not typical of the L091.

Great looking fish, too bad they do hide so much. I've found too many plecs look good but you never get to see them.

It looks like he has stress stripes, young sailfin pleco's look very similar to yours when they are stressed as they go paler and develop thick pale stripes on their body- i would say its a sailfin.

That's definitely not a sailfin or common.

I don't think he's stressed and he does have a cave to hide in. He was exactly the same colour in the lfs. They had him about 8 months and couldn't sell him, so we brought him. Best thing we did! Here are a couple more pics, hope they help!

He'd just been having a swim around cleaning up the tank!

This is his favourite hiding place.

We've noticed he has small bristles on his fins, don't know if that helps.

Based on the above photos, I would say it's a Hypostomus cf. cochliodon (L050, Spotted Humpbacked Pleco) - very similar to this photo here.

Edit to add: it still seems like stress colouration to me I'm afraid :/ either that or it's unusual colouration variation.

Thanks Bloo. It is very similar but I'm still not sure. If he was stressed what other signs would he be showing please? Obviously we don't want him to be unhappy cos he's such a lovely thing :(

How large is the tank (size and volume) and what else is in it?

Edit: is this it from your profile ? If so which tank ? I'm not familiar with these makes. Size on volume ?

can't tell you what he is but he's a lovely looking fish, and your tank looks really nice too :good:

Thanks Miss Wiggle :D
Its my other half who needs the credit. After several attempts I realised I couldn't make nice looking caves for toffee! I think I'll stick to doing my planted tanks.
