Picked this up at the LFS as a texas cichlid but looks to me more like a JD, was wondering what others thought?

How large is it? It has features of Anomalochromis thomasi, African butterfly cichlid. The blue and red details are nice.

I agree with you that it looks more like a Jack Dempsey. I would give a guess at either a regular Jack or an electric blue Jack Dempsey.
Just saw your other thread. Your fish store needs to sell the correct fish. This is not a Texas cichlid, I would complain and get a refund or not go back again.

It does look like a Jack Dempsey. There are some color morphs among these fish.

It's about 3 inch currently

The other one was from an online store and I haven't used them since. This was from maidenhead aquatics

Really! I guess some stores are better than others. I would be surprised but it could be a carpinitis Texas cichlid but doubt it.

Definitely a (young) Dempsey, Rocio octofasciata. Wild type. 100% certainty.
