 can a juvie flowwerhorn breed with a semi adult convict

the flowerhorn is the male 'nuchal' hump development the convict is female withorange yellow in ventral region (breeding dress i think ill post pic in members pic as i dont seem to be able to here )

they are displaying the general breeding display of cichlids but can they mate or is the flower too young to fertilize the eggs :/ :/ :

No There genetic Make up are totaly different, lets say they do breed ( in 1 out of a billion chances ) there eggs will not be fertilized.l

sorry mate am not up to speed on this subject

because i am rubbish ha ha :kana:

i know that flowerhorns are hybids of (cic trimaculatum and cic citrinellum)
so are these fish genetical the same to be able to produce there offsping(flowerhorn) or is the term flowerhorn loosely used to classify cichlid hybrids

i have had a salvi breed with a jd and the offspring were ok infertilie but okay

the flowerhorn is a hybrid that is conceived in a lab by the eggs and sperm of two fish that would not normally mate in the wild, same as the blood parrot. hybrids are typically sterile and cannot mate in normal conditions. although some hybrids have managed to mate.

usually it is not the practice of breeders to put two fish together that may mate and spawn as this produces mutts. usually the spawn are culled or used as feeder fish to prevent them entering publiic domain. this way the true species of the fish is maintained.

thankc for the helpful quote the flowerhorn is only in with the cons till it is old enough to go in my larger tank it is funny watching him he is like a love struck puppy :fun:

do you have a pair of cons that have paired up? if so, you may want to move the flowerhorn. breeding cons are very aggressive. will fight to the death to protect their babies. mine even take on my devil

yes i do have breeding cons the female is unattached though one of the offspring i kept i tank divide when the adult cons mate this should be okay he will be moved to the other tank when i feel he is big enough for the current fish in their :D

actually I would have to say that it is totally possible... you wouldn't think that a JD and a GT could breed but they can I have seen the pics of he offspring, and also it is totally possible for the offspring to breed as well. can't say as though I am all for hybirization in fact I am dead set against it.

im not trying to breed them it was a retorical question as they are displaying what i wuold class as typical cichlid breedig behavior

never said you were I was simply stating that I am dead set against hybirization
