I have a 10 gal tank with a med-large black moor. He is very docile and about 4-5 years old.

I know i know a black moor shouldn't be in a 10 gal but truthfully he has been in a 55 gal and a 300 gal pond and he was sick looking to the point i thought he was going to die , so i placed him in a hospital tank ( 10 gal ). after a day he started to get better and a few days later i moved him back to the bigger tanks and he acted like it again. the water parametes were the same and everything so he just likes the 10 gal and i had to get a new hospital tank.

that being said i wanted to know if i could place a betta in with him for company and color. I have always wanted a betta but couldn't bring myself to purchase one of those small "betta" tanks ( yeah right) to house one.

i forgot to mention the temp of the tank is warmer than your traditional cold water tank but it is not heated ( not sure of the exact temp the thermometer is broken and i haven't got around to rep[lacing it just yet)

The answer to your question is yes and no, because it CAN be done, but its very risky.
The betta might nip at the goldfishies fins, and vise versa.
The goldfish might swallow the betta :)blink:)
They both have different food requirments, so you would have to make sure that the betta ate his pellets and not the goldfish, and you would have to make sure that the goldfish ate his flakes/pellets and not the betta. (ok that sounded kind of funny, what I'm trying to say is you don't want the other fish eating the other fish's food)
They both have different temperature requirments, goldfish can like colder water but the fancies (like yours) can survive and actually prefer warmer temps (like 75 degrees). Bettas can take the colder temps, but like most tropical fish they like it at about 78 to 80 degrees. So you might be ok there.

So...in the end, I would defently not reccomend it. Goldfish are social, so he would benifit from having a friend, but in a 10 gallon there is no room for that, unfortunatly. Maybe you could move him up to a 20-29 gallon and give him a friend? (a goldfish, not a betta, though)
Oh, and yes, I had a female betta with goldfish before, but she sulked and hid most of the time. I had to take her out of the water (and put her in a cup) to feed him because the goldfish and the danios would steal her food! She's now happy living in a heated 5 1/2 gallon with 5 tetras :D

Edit:
Oh, and BTW, if you really want a betta, why not just get a 2.5-5 gallon? Those are perfect sizes for bettas, they won't be cramped.

Right now i can't really afford a 2.5 - 5 gal for one fish. I was just hoping that maybe a betta might be able to join my moor in his little home!! :dunno:

p.s. i don't think the moor is big enough to eat a betta. The reason i asked is because a store near me has betta's in a tank with their larger cold water fish rather than in tropical tanks so i figured that maybe my tank could house a betta

It sounded like a good idea but the meer requirements for temperature differences alone would make it not work. One or the other would be unhappy.
