I'm buying the fish as a present and would like something a little more 'up market' so to speak than a CT or VT.  I used to buy from someone on here years ago but it looks like they are no longer active.  My LFS doesn't stock anything other than the usual red and blues and whilst I know you can get some lovely boys they're not really what I'm looking for.

Check out AquaBid, there are pages and pages of bettas on there. The only downside is that it can be very expensive because you have to pay for the fish (~20), shipping ($15-50), importing fee ($5), and the transhipper (~$2-10 per fish). It's really worth it if you're looking for an unusual or exceptional beautiful fish. You can find pretty much any fin type, color, and pattern.

Hi, sorry I took so long to get back on here.
 
Ha, you don't know the half of it Kasumibetta!  I lost my beloved fighter called Foo somewhat prematurely and due to my failing health  decided to break down his tank [a rather nice 30litre cube that cost me around £80].  A friend of my daughters has been walking my dogs for me for ages but will accept no payment so I like to give her gifts.  I cleaned up the tank, gave her that and finally managed to find a nice orange Betta for her.  Ended up with a VT but a really stunning colour!
