Hi!
My little Amos seems to ALWAYS have some sort of little "something" on him. i don't think he's ever been without some little lump or bump since the day I brought home from the hellhole WalMart...
The spot you're referring to sounds very similar to what Amos has had... It all started with Amos when one of my co-workers grossly overfed him (like 100 pellets over a weekend - EEK!) Anyway... when I got back to work on Monday, I immediately did a 100% change and scrubbed the tank & rocks. I noticed he had a white spot just above his gill on one side of his head. It looked like a tiny white puffy spot. It eventually turned into something that looked like a pimple. the whole time he was swimming and eating normally, even making bubble nests like crazy. I am a VERY paranoid fishy momma, so I decided that (when it hadn't gone away after several days) I needed to treat it. I treated with maracyn, and it didn't go away - several weeks later, it finally went away on its own with clean water.
Since then, he's now developed another one on the other side of his head - but he's otherwise acting normally. I'm not going to treat him this time unless I see it get worse. I'm just making sure to keep his water sparkly clean.
When you say it seems to be secreting white stuff - does it just look like there's a white stringy "thing" hanging off of it, or is there liquid stuff coming out of it? (they can actually both look to be one in the same)...
Just make sure to also keep his water in the 80 degree range if you can.
As long as he's doing everything else normally, like eating & swimming - he'll be okay.
Things to watch out for are loss of color, raggedy fins, swollen eye, scales sticking up or him hanging out at the bottom with his fins clamped OR he starts breathing like he's gasping for air. (you probably already know all this, but just wanted to put it out there). If he does start doing any of those things, you should consider another treatment, but until then I think he'll be okay.
