Bumble Bee Shrimp Cube...

No smell now, a little bit to start with but I did spend a long time washing the Cat Litter to remove the odour...

Rather impressed with it as a substrate and only negative points I have read was that some people have issues with getting the plants to stay planted long enough to root due to it being a light weight substrate, but so far with Glosso and Downoi the plants seem to be staying down well unless they are disturbed. :good:

nice little tank, i love the aqua flow filters, i use the 50 in my fry tanks, which would be good enough for yours too if you find the shrimp cant hold onto anything :D

Had some cuttings from the 4ft and so decided to plant them in the cube and see how they do... also purchased some Indian Almond leaves to help condition the water after reading good things about them and have added one large leaf for now.

Oh and almost forgot to mention that the light has been changed as visible in the pics, sold the Boyu and changed the lighting over to a 11W attachable Dennerle Nano Light.

Hi Tizer,

Yes they are great little filters especially for the price, have the 100 on the lowest setting. Was planning on the 50 version but seemed silly to pay more for the smaller filter as the 100 was cheaper for some reason  so I decided to get the bigger version and save the extra money.

It's one of the Superfish cubes that PFK gave away with subscriptions a few years back, I have one sitting next to me as a betta tank - nice tanks :).

Very nicely set up :D.

A tip on the shrimp - don't put cherries in there if you want the bumblebees to breed. The cherries breed far, far faster and I don't know if the baby bb shrimp just get out competed for food by the cherries or what but I've only ever managed to get a breeding population in tanks separate from cherries . Possibly just me though lol.

three-fingers,

Do you think it would be worth starting with Cherries? Only everything says that Bees are harder to keep than Cherries and I have found someone locally that breeds them and can let me have some... Wondered if I should start with these and then re-home them once I know I am able to keep the shrimp safely and I'm confident that the Bees will survive.

What do you think?

Thanks,

T'UK

If you have the option of getting the bee's locally then go for them first. You won't gain any real experience with cherries as you just chuck em in and forget about them really. No technique to looking after them.

Hi minnnt,

Sadly I can't find anyone locally with Bees just Cherries, so that's why I was wondering if it's worth starting with Cherries before shedding out a fair amount of money with postage on the bees?

Thanks,
T'UK

Arh right, sorry I thought you meant you could get bees locally. I still think you would be better getting what you want as like I said, they're easy to look after so you wouldn't gain any knowledge. Cherries can survive in a unheated and unheated tank so they're pretty hardy. Lol.

I've got cherries and I don't offer them any more care than any of my other tanks. Infact, probably less!

Received some money from someone for Christmas to spend on something I wanted, so I decided to use it for the Shrimp... Just ordered 6 Bumble Bees - Caridina cf. breviata from Kesgrave :hyper:

Sorry, only just saw your question!

My answer would have been "no" anyway, so congrats on the Caridina cf. breviata! :hyper:

Cherrys are VERY easy to keep, but that's not to say other dwarf shrimp aren't, as long as you can maintain a cycled or planted tank its easy! :)

Bee shrimp, CRS, CBS etc can be slightly harder to keep as they are more in-bred though selection for patterning and colour, but your shrimp are a distinct species so thats not the case. Make sure you take pics! :)

Those are real cool shrimpys!!!! I may want a shrimp only tank after I give them a go :look: don't tell my parents. Lol :)

Oh and btw is that a pic of your shrimp or just off the Internet because you said you ordered 6 and that's 7. Either way cool shrimp

No worries, Thanks for the advice...

Kesgrave shrimp should be here Wednesday now due to B/H on Monday, but I already have two bumble bees as I popped in to a MA store on the way home from work on Friday and was looking at their CRS and spotted a single bumble bee, then spotted another one in the tank next door with some Amanos... Both were left over from a previous shrimp delivery and had been in hiding.
