I'm getting ready to build the hood for my top 55G. I have a half light on it that works, but I want a full light and the big one I have doesn't work. I thought rather than spending the money trying to diagnose and fix the thing, I would purchase and build myself a hood (which is my plans anyway along with stands).

I wanted to know if this would be a good light fixture to use for building the hood, and yes, price is what made me notice it. :)

OOPS. They don't support that.

Seach this number:

It will show it. :)

It's not a hood, it's a light fixture that I want to use in construction of a hood.

Aquarium bulbs is no problem. That takes a standard 40W 4FT bulb same as most 55G aquarium lits.

Waterproofing I haven't decided, but I have seen a lot of different methods...

I'll keep track of this thread. I have problems finding a bulb taht will fit my hood and have enough wattage.

Keep in mind that's gonna be a direct wire hookup with a chain switch... not exactly ideal. You'll have to find some way to get electricity to it, which is probably gonna mean wiring up a normal two prong plugin for it. The chain isn't gonna be a wonderful idea either.

Well, what I'm planning to keep is the assembly, ballasts, etc.. if they will work.

The light switch is going to go because I plan to have two on a timer system (one daylight one moonlight) and the power cord will be combined with the second for a single plug. :)

I'm ore wonder about the assembly, ballast, starter, and the reflector (because I'm not sure I will be able to remove that.).

The chain is the switch that comes on them. I was just talking to home depot and got a killer idea, but I'm not sure how it will work for providing the necessary lighting etc...

First, I build the hood and have it with a double opening. Basically the very top level opens seperate from the half swing of the hood.

Then I put in the lights and put fans in the top of the hood (this hood will be wood).

Then, below the lights I put glass in, dark blue for the moonlight side, clear for the daylight and seal that up with silicon I. :)

Any comments?
