If one was inclined..how possible would it be to make a profit on selling tanks youve built. im building a 100 gallon tank. will cost 209 usd. wife says i should sell it to someone here locally through something like craigslist. is this feasable? not wanting to make a living with it, but it seems like fun.

Hah I was just thinking the same thing after reading the sticky post about DIY tanks! No worries though, I probably live nowhere near you :p

I imagine you could make quite a profit if the tank was made well. You might want to stay away from the standard shape 55 gallons though as most pet stores have crazy cheap deals with everything included. If you could do custom tanks though I'm sure you could make tons.. and it would be really fun!

You would have to take out a public liability insurance policy to gaurd you should the tank fail.

Sorry to rain on your fire but just something to think about

You would struggle to sell tanks at any profit except to people wanting custom (odd) dimensions.

The real money would be in making fine looking stands and hoods. There is a far higher profit margin on these than just the glass tanks.

the tank im making is also going to have a stand and canopy. this is gonna be fun.

If you did really odd shaped tanks, or custom tank sizes/shapes you MIGHT be able to make money doing it.. but take into consideration time spent doing it, and the hassel of buying materials ie gas money.

I seem to be able to find used tanks around here cheap enough though.. so not something I would considering doing (buying from someone brand new)

The way to make the mone if you dont have a full time job is to

Build a custom tank for a company including bio filter hood and stand then rent it to them with with a minimum lease period of 1 year. this way you keep the tank for future installations and you price it that you get your money back in 6 months.

Large companies have special budgets for things like this and it is also tax deductable for the companies.

I am looking into doing this. But i am also looking into finding a company in europe that can make Acrylic tanks for me. I would then make the whole inbuilt filter heating computer system for the aquarium. they would then have to rent this for a minimum of three years due to the cost.

All good to know :) I never would have thought of insurance of any kind. I think unless you were doing it as a business though you wouldn't really have to have that (I'm in Canada, dunno if it's different where you are). I'm just thinking along the lines of if you were to sell a used aquarium, and it were to fail, you wouldn't be liable. It's a risk the buyer would take, right? If you had it as a business though you'd have to have something like that for sure.

That's an interesting idea, about leasing them out.. sounds like too much paperwork for me though :p Heh maybe I'll just see about building myself a tank and see what goes from there :)

You could get round the insurance liability by selling it as "second hand" ;)

I you buy a 2nd hand cooker off someone, and it breaks, you don't go back to them for your money back do you !!! ;)
