Errrm ...i'm new around here and i might be posting in wrong forum anyway ,

this is my question:

I am not entirely a newbie as i have owened an aq. for 2 years but never really took alot of intrest in it,but lately i read a book and noticed whta a lot of things i did badly ,anyway.

I am planning to build an aquarium from scratch (glass)

Can someone give me basic guide lines, for example : is silicone enough to seal it and keep it togheter?

Hi P-Shark :)

Welcome to the forum. :hi:

I'll move your thread to our Do-It-Yourself section where it will be more readily seen by the members who do that kind of thing. Hope to see more of your posts as you progress with your project. :D

Well, first off welcome... as for your question, you leave out to many details. Things we need to know in order to answer your question are:

1. Tank Size, (height and volume mainly)
2. How you plan to run filtration. IE drilled for a sump or something like that.
3. What your budget is.
4. What type of fish you plan to keep in this tank.

Those would be the quick basics... You may find cheaper options using alternative building methods depending on what you want done. Good Luck.

Making a glass aquarium is extremely difficult.
If the edges are not exactly smooth and level you will not get a good seal and it will eventually spring a leak, from the silicone giving way under pressure over a period of time).

Making an acrylic tank is a good option, I've done it and it wasn't *all* that difficult..unless you are not "handy". I know some people would be like ..yeah um, what? if they tried to make one.

It's not cheap though. And unless you plan on making one of a significant size...it won't be worth it. Anything under a 20 gallon is a waste of your money...as you can buy one for what you'll spend making it...on top of all your time and effort to boot.

SO first off thanks for your answers

Regardin size i wanted to build a 140cm length,6ocm height, 45cm width=115 gallons / 420 litres

My friend has a company which make and cut glass and i was going to ask him to give me the glass.( should the corners be any particular shape?)

Regarding filtration : A sponge filter (diy) and a powerfull External 2000w Project Filter

Budget 300-350 Euros

Fish would be :
x6 Cherry Barb
x6 Zebra Danio
x4 Guppy
x4 3 spot or lace gourami
x4 Peppered Corydoras
x2 Siamese Flying Fpx
x4 Platy
x4 Swordtail

....I found the links very usefull but i don't think they apply for such a big aquarium!

ANd last thing would i need "casing" or anything to hold the aquarium together WHEN FILLED with water or is the silicone enough?
