Building A Pond

Put the bicks where? In the 3 foot deep part?

I always see peoples ponds with plant steps. what's wrong with mine?

well if you want your fish alive then you would remove it, a heron will be able to sit on the side near the shelf and then grab a fish and eat it!

put the bricks in the water one on top of the other and then put the plant on top :good:

That could be a proble, i can't dig any deeper due to the presence of a waste pipe.

But i still don't understand, almost all ponds have planting steps.

And if we do have any herons, there will be a net over the pool :)

hmmm, ok. I will have to have a think about that one.

I decided i will be filtering. Im going to be using a submersible sump pump, pipe the water into a filter box with the media in. Then pipe that into a waterfall i will be using.

personally i wouldnt use the pool filter/pump
as it will prbably be to big for this size of pond and you dont know what metals/nasties it contains.

also i would advice to dig the shelf out to full depth.

1) the shelf will act as a heron step
2)if something scared the fish eg t he heron they would probably hide in the plants (again they will be in bigger danger)
3)you will get more creases in the liner. (more places for bad bacteria to gather)

I wouldn't use a pool/filter pump either, as i have no idea if a pool pump/filter differs much from a regular pond filter/pump and whether it is safe to use or not.

However a shelf in a pond is usually fine as long as the sides of the shelf are steep- herons wade into water rather than jump into it and won't want go in the pond if there isn't a sloping shallow area for it to wade into. As a further precaution, you can also always add a fake plastic heron to the side of the pond- herons are territorial birds and won't visit a small pond if they see (what they think is) another heron already there. I once saw a heron at my pond and so i got a fake heron and after that i never saw the real heron again (and have never lost any fish to any herons either).

With creases in the pond liner, as long as the pond is kept clear of debris like dead plants or leaves etc, then the pond should be fine :) .
