Bubblenest Master at work

For anyone that was wondering, this spawn was a bust too. :-( She kept checking out the nest and neither of them seemed happy with it, so he kept chasing her and that didn't help her being scared at all. :X Then when I came home from school today both of them were torn to shreds. His dorsal fin is just rays now. I'm very upset, he was so gorgeous. I wouldn't have thought such a tiny, peaceful female woulda done that but obviously she has a nasty streak. Women!

I don't know if I'll try spawning again anytime in the near future, I'm pretty fed up. :dunno:

You gotta get something going for that show in April...

Anyway, I am sorry to hear that. It's really a shame. I hope whenever you decide to spawn again, you have better luck.

I was going to say the same thing. The perfect show fish is around four months old. So if you plan on bringing something/someone to show in April, ya gotta get some fry before the new year. But also keep in mind what sloooow growers plakats are. They're 3 times slower than your average long finned betta, and they're at their peak at about 7-8 months. Also remember...the bigger fish ALWAYS wins :p

Wuv, is it only fish with the plakat tail that grow slower, or do fish with plakat genes grow slower too? I'm wondering because both of my spawns had a plakat dad, but obviously I won't see any actual plakats until F2, they'll all be long tail for the F1. Should I expect them to grow more slowly too? (sorry for hijacking, Julie.)

From what I've seen in my own fish room, can't speak for everybody, but yes they will grow slower. I've compared pics and sizes of my ctxct to step siblings of ctxpla and they're growing MUCH slower with the same water change/feeding ratio.

I'm seeing the same thing with the first spawn. They get massive water changes, lotsa good food, and haven't had any problems with disease or anything since early on. But they are just growing a bit slowly, and color development is REALLY slow. (either that or I've just bred the most boring bettas ever). Also, two of them have developed double rays in the last 2 weeks, which is weird.
