Hello everyone!
I'm new to this forum, and I have a question. My betta Calculon (Go Futurama!) about two weeks ago started developing this tiny little lump on his right side. When it first started out, it looked like a little raised out scale. Well, a few days later, it was more of a bump. Then suddenly a few days ago a bubble type thing formed, and it gets a little worse every day. What the heck is it? The rest of him looks completely normal.
He is still eating like a pig, very active, no behavioral changes whatsoever. He's in a 3 gallon aquarium, fully filtered and heated (80 degrees) and I feed him bloodworms.
What he looked like February 19th.
And one week later, February 26th: Pic.1 and Pic.2

That's really strange, I can't think what it could possibly be.

Maybe somebody else will have an idea.

Probably lymphocystis. It is a viral infection so nothing to treat them with. It will most likely grow a little more (and resemble a cauliflower) and then go away..it may pop up from time to time but shouldnt out-rightly kill the fish, just look unsightly.
Lymphocystis is only contagious to other similar (species related) fish. Again. shouldnt cause any real health problems.
if any changes in behavior get back to the boards. some good waterchanges for the week wouldnt hurt either.
he is lovely!!
WELCOME TO THE FORUM! (pics helped a lot)
Cheers

Thanks, everyone!
I'll do some water changes and try to keep him as comfortable as possible, and hopefully things will get better.
I had been out of the fish/betta business for a year or two (we had a kid ) until sometime last year we basically rescued a betta from a girl at my husband's work. The poor guy was kept in basically a tiny little cup. He was a very dull fish from his tiny life of boredom. When he passed away a few months or so ago, I got this guy and man he's awesome! Full of life and vigor and energy! Reminds me of why I loved bettas to begin with.

They are a wonderful species of fish to have they really have a lot of character. Just thought I'd mention that adding a little pure sea salt can help with a lot of ailments. If your fish isn't looking his best not acting like he should his colour is not as vibrant then a bit of salt in his water can help. :) and maybe help with that nasty lymphocystis. You probably know this but I just thought to mention it just in case.

Hey all!
My fish is still just a pluggin' away! His side pretty much look the same (pic1), but the shape of the bubbly thing is slightly different. It still looks like his side is going to explode (pic2).
Weird, right?
I'll let you know how it goes! Poor guy.

Certainly looks like lympho...just keep his water clean and feed good food. He should be fine. Any change in behavior or if any redness with the swelling let us know.
and no need to add salt in this case. Just clean water.
cheers

Hi, my betta also has a bubble like this. I've bought him so because he was the most cheerful at the shop and I've had him for 5 months now, almost 6.

Besides his recurring swim bladder disease, he's a happy, playful little fellow. His bubble has decreased in size over the months, but it's still there, near his right grill. So, hopefully, you and I both won't have much to worry about ;-)

Cheers

Hey everyone! Remember me?
Well, it's been, what, 3 months now, and my fish is way way worse. I actually just got home from a three week vacation and I was shocked at how much worse he looks. My dad was the one who came over and fed him while I was gone (I set out pre-measured food so there wouldn't be any overfeeding), so I know he was taken care of correctly. But he has gotten listless and wobbly... really sad! :/
Here's how much worse he looks:

He is still eating like a pig, but good grief he looks awful! It's sticking soooo far out and totally discolored and ugh he looks so terrible.
Should I do anything..? I don't know!!! :-(

So Calculon has severely gone downhill... if he doesn't pass away tonight, I am going to have to euthanize him tomorrow. It's breaking my heart to watch him... But I'm freaked out about doing it...

Sorry to hear this. :( So what did you do?
