hey guys, u all know iv got my divided 10g tank for my male and female betta. they love to follow eachother up and down the clear divider and even try to escape to the other side. i woulda thoght that my male woulda built a bubble nest by now, but he hasn't. hes only like 5 months old so that could have something to do with it but i think its something bigger -_-

~ what are bubble nests made of?
~is my betta to young?

i also dont have a styrofoam cup in there so maybe he just needs a place. wat do i do with the styrofoam cup? how do i have to cut it?

hmmm.. that's strange. what are you feeding him and what's the temperature? Having a styrofoam cup really only matters when you're breeding, it protects the nest and lets you control where the babies are born. at least this is what i've gathered. My males all make bubble nests in their bowls when they are happy. If i give them bloodworms they'll make a nest, If i change their water they'll make a nest, When i added live plants to their bowls they all made nests.

Maybe he's just too distracted by the girls to have time to build a nest? Or try heating his tank, bubble nests are ment for breeding and if the water is cold it isn't propper breeding atmosphere.

Bubble nests, as far as i know, are simply made of .. bubbles. The fish goes to the surface, inhales, then blows a bubble that floats up into the nest. There may be some more to it, but if there is i dont' know it. ^_^'

Your tank sounds interesting. I love watching my males and females display for each other. fun stuff. have your girls gotten virticall stripes yet?

Its usually suggested TO ME that to breed your bettas when they're 6 months and older... his horomones just might not be acting up yet... bubblenest are made when bettas inhale air, wrap the air with mucus made by the betta and is blown outta its mouth

EDIT~ lol! Look at the first sentece lol changed it

errr...sorry thats not entirely correct. :(
bettas can be sexually mature at 3 months and most suggest that you breed them at around 3 or 4.
ime 6 month old bettas dont do as well as 3 month bettas.

but i dont htink thats the issue here...

i found that once i started adding blackwater expert to my water, all of my males started making nests right away. i now always add it to the water and most of my males have giant nests going all of the time.

are you trying to get him to build nests for breeding or do you jus twant to see him build them for fun?

i have a male that is about 7 months now and he has never built a bubblenest. He expresses a lot of interest in the female yet he doesn't build a nest while my four month old goes nuts and builds huge nests. This doesn't concern me because i know he is happy and healthy as i have had him since he was 2 months and have no intention of breeding him. It could be that you may have to much surface current in your tank for him to want to build a nest. A floating plant or styrofoam cup could make a nice place for him to want to build a nest. However if you don't want to breed them and he is happy and healthy i just wouldn't worry about it.

Please don't give the wrong information if your not 100% sure.

In my own observations, some of my bettas build bubblenests, some don't. However, as some have said in their experiences, rain does have an effect with bettas and breeding. I've noticed that whenever I change my water, the next day a bubble nest is up and running.

not to start an argument here (cause i agree with you for the most part) but a difference in 2 months (3 to 4 month fish vs 6 month fish) isn't going to affect the outcome when it comes to breeding IMO.
bettalova asked me when he could breed his 3 month old ct that he recently got off me. i told him i would prefer that he wait for a few months more than anything because i wanted him to be prepared and not jump into anything without having all the groundwork layed beforehand. perhaps thats where he got his "6 month" theory from.
i have bred 6 month old fish before with success by the way. (my last spawn were of that age and produced over 600 fry). i won't wait 6 months with my next spawn though. my ct are 3 months old and like you say, sexually mature. within the next month i will sibling x as the females are ready to go now and my chosen male is all but ready. ;)

i have about an 8 month old opaque.. just recently started building nests.. so i figure ill try him to breed now..

im not gonna try bkks cts for a few months.. the female i picked is much larger than the male, so once the male grows a bit, i will spawn them..

not to get TOO off topic LOL..

your betta is still probably getting used to its new environment.. if im correct, hes only been there about a week..

give him some time to adjust and get comfortable..

maybe hes too busy following the female to care about building a nest..

who knows

thanx for ur posts guys, i wasn't planning on breeding him anytime soon at all, i was just worryed something was wrong because he had been stareing at that female from the other side of the divider, flarein his fins and then she'll flare back and change color. i would of expected a nest but maybe he needs time. im feeding him on betta bite but id like to get a black worm culture somewhere soon and maybe buys sum bio gold and c how thta works out. ill try sum black water wen i can get to a lfs. thnx a bunch

About the styrofoam cup you have to cut it long ways. Where do you guys get female bettas? i can never find them.

i just bought a vt female from walmart, i rely like her. my dad think shes kinda ugly thogh :D she is pretty plain, red fins, red gill covers, brown lips, and wen shes trying to impress the male she puts on some teal stripes on her tail.
