hI THERE I HAVE A BUBBLE MOLLY WITH TATTOO, AND IT IS VERY FAT SO I WAS ASKING IF IT MIGHT BE PREGNENT AND HOW DO I KNOW IF IT IS, ?

Hi, If you have got male mollies in your tank then ur other mollie has a good chance of been pregnent. If she looks health and is swimming around and eating ok her big belly should'nt be a sign of illness. Chances are she is pregnent. You wont know for certain untill she gives birth though. If you have got a breeding tank you can pop her in there, i dont know exactly how long they hold their young for but i think its only a few days.

By doing this she can have them in there and the other fish cant get to them, if she has them in your main tank anything bigger than them will try to eat them.

Hope this helps.

A pregnant molly will get very large before giving birth. Viewed from the side, the back end of her abdomen will usually take on a square shape like one of the dice they make for kids that have rounded off corners. The average time to develop a new drop of fry after the previous one is about 6 weeks but if you don't have a starting date it can be hard to predict the next. If you have a large female you can expect anywhere from 20 to 50 fry from each drop so it will require significant tank space to be able to raise the fry from a single drop.

If your fish has been tattooed her chances (if it's a female) of producing healthy, viable fry are very much reduced. Fish dyeing and tattooing is an extremely cruel practice that is fortunately being slowly stamped out. I'm absolutely not flaming you but I urge you not to support animal abuse by purchasing more mutilated fish. This isn't all they do - tattoing is the least of it, they also dye fish (dip in caustic to remove slime coat, dip in dye, dip in irritant to cause slime coat to regrow, approximately 5-10% of fish survive the procedure) and cut off their fins (some people think that tailless fish look good - needless to say they can barely swim and lead horrible lives).

If you can give us a photo of the fish, we can tell you if it's male or female and also probably if she's pregnant. The way you sex livebearers is by looking at one of the three fins on the underside of the fish. Two fins in front are pointed and paired, they usually move together. The fin behind them will fan out like a triangle in a female and be a backwards-facing tube in the male. Males use this tube (called a gonopodium) to internally fertilise the female. I have diagrams to show what it looks like but they are for platies which look very different to balloon mollies.
