Help.

I recently brought some plants and wood for my aquarium. Within 2 hours of putting them in the water has turned brown! :S

I am doing water changes daily or more but it does not make any difference.

pH 7.4

Ammonia 0

Nitrite 1mg/l

Nitrate 40 mg/l

I know the nitrates and nitites are high, but they should not be causing this. Has anyone any ideas for a solution ????

Did you soak the wood in water for a few hours before you put it into your tank?

This happened to me just take the wood out and let it soak in the bath or something for about a day, then it should be ok to put back into the tank!

Hope this helps!

Hmmm.... I did soak it, but maybe not for long enough. Will try that.

Nitrites and nitrates are down.

Thanks

Any other thoughts if that doesn't work?!!!! :D

The brown water is most likely caused by the tannins being leeched from the wood. Soaking the wood, changing the water until the water stays clear, should help.

Dont worry too much about it , your tetras will love you, they thrive on the tannins in the water. If its too tea like for your tastes  just keep up the water changes,or put a carbon pad in your filter and the colour will be back to norm in a week or so.
mind some woods can seep for months :D
