Brown Slime On My Blue Filter Sponges

Hi all,

Just recently noticed a brown slime growing on my Blue filters in my Jewel Tank. The grwoth has been quite rapid over the last week and has semi blocked up my white sponge filter which has been replaced.

What is this brown slime, Is this good or bad?

Hi. It's normal really; and more good than bad. Desireable bacteria live there so you don't want to excessively clean them off too much. Excess food etc. will gather there so once every long while you might want to swish it around in some tank water that's been removed from the tank. If you clean or replace them too much you'll lose or kill the good bacteria and you'll see some ammonia and nitrite readings.

it might also be brown algae, which isn't really bad. it's just a sign of not enough light.
