Hi all:

I've had a 26 US gallon bowfront tank set up for almost a year now. It is doing great. I have zebra danios, neon and black tetras, two clown loaches, a lone platy, and a few other tetras (can't remember name right now - head and tail light??)

Anyway, I bought my first pair (male and female) gold ram cichlids. I absolutely love these guys. The lfs folks told me they would be fine with my community tank and so far everyone is getting along spendidly.

Is there anything in particular I should know about proper care for these guys? I've read they like hiding spots so thought about buying a few more rocks to makes some caves, or the like. Might they like a small clay pot??

Are there any other cichlids I might add that would be compatibile with my mix?

Thanks!

I have a kribensis cichlid in my comminuty tank with no issues.

I also have a blue ram, seems very peaceful but he is in with barbs and other semi aggressive fish, not tetras. but of what i can see of them they should be ok in there too. Just keep an eye on them at first introduction

You could add some plants(real or fake) also rocks and caves most fish will appreciate the cover these items provide.
The inside of a flower pot or flat rock are often the chosen spawning location for rams so add these items and you might be lucky.

As the tank is a 26 Us gallon is isn't a good idea to add more cichlids, as these guys need there room especially when there spawning. Saying that you could sqweeze in another pair of Rams or Apistogramma, but like I say the tank is a bit small.

The two clown loaches will need to be re homed soon as they get pretty big, 12 inches or more. Lovely fish but unsuitable for a 26 gallon tank. Other than that your stocking sounds good.

If you have added your rams as like an after thought i would just make sure the temp is up to 80-82F as they like the warmth

would another pair rams fit into a tank that was around 200L?

Thanks for the friendly and helpful replies everyone!

I've had tropical tanks off and on over the years but never owned any cichlids. These are some of the most beautiful and elegant fish I have ever seen. I can see why folks like to have all-cichlid tanks.

I would not advise a Kribensis either, I have had problems with them in my community tank.

One fish that I would DEFINITELY recommend though is a Dwarf Gourami. I have a "powder blue" Dwarf Gourami in with my American Cichlids and I have to say it is by far my favourite fish. Very smart, fun to watch, and personable. Mine actually likes to be pet on his side, and they can squirt water above the surface! Really cool to watch. The only thing is, make sure you get them from a really good fish store, because many of them are bred in poor conditions and will die easily. Only get one if they all look healthy in the tank.
