Added one in there of my crawdad (crayfish) his name's Diddy lol aka Crawdiddy

That's a very beautiful fish :good: Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the crayfish make a meal of your plants if you introduce live ones? Excellent looking aquarium, I really like the wood features.

Thank you..I have had a few live plants in there at different times and he has never eaten them..He eats pieces of the leftover worms that fall to the ground and pellets of fish food that I give to the shinners.

How do you maintain the cooler temperatures and higher flow that those trout require?

I have had them for over two years, and have done well by just doing very frequent water changes, and in the warmer months of the year I place two frozen half gallon water jugs in there to keep the water at a cooler temperature. In the near future I am going to install a hydroponic water chiller to maintain the cooler water. As for the flow the filter puts a high amount of current in the water as well as does the output on the undergravel filter. They are a very adaptable fish and we have observed them in very shallow lakes and ponds that get very warm in the summer months and they have thrived.

Beautiful specimen! Where did you get it? Did you catch it yourself?

Yes, my husband and I did, out of a stream they were about to poison..They are not a native species and considered evasive, so they want to get rid of them to plant more native species.. :)

i think they are so nice looking! i might consider something like this when i get back to the states. good conversation piece for the house i would imagine.

Ya actually it really has been. LOL and it's fun to go on an outdoor excursion to see what else lives in the local streams, and ponds that would be a neat addition. I really want to add a few sculpin next but dang they are so hard to find and catch.. :)

How are they poisoning the stream? I'm in Ely MN, a stone's throw from Canada.

With some sort of liquid chemical i've read, that will kill off the fish within a certain stretch of stream, but dilutes as it travels further and becomes less potent, until there's virtually nothing left of it. That way it doesn't continue to travel into the rivers and tributaries. But it's sad to see, such a waste of a beautiful fish!!

Why do they want to do that? Just to get rid of the brookies?

Yes, they are not native to Montana, and considered an evasive species. They have taken over many of the mountain lakes and streams where the native fish like west slope cutthroat, and bull trout used to thrive. Now both of those species along with a few others are considered a species of concern due to their low numbers. So their hope is to poison streams where these fish used to spawn in hopes of bringing their numbers back up.

I get it. I hear of these things happening and it always seems so drastic. But at least you've saved a handful. They're so beautiful.

My husband and I have talked about starting a "native" tank with punkinseed sunnies and such. They're so gorgeous and I think they'd be a lot of fun to have!
