hi

A bronze cory I have only had for a couple of months tonight seemed to almost explode around the tank with energy then just sank down and died :-(

Does anyone know if this is a sign of disease or just one of those things? I seem to remember that Bronzies sometimes die inexplicably?

0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 15-ish nitrates. I change about 15% of water every week
Temperature is 77F

My 200L tank only has 4 small gouramis, 3 corys, 2 gobies and 5 small gold danios - there was no bullying going on.

Thanks

Steve

It is most likely a symptom of something wrong. But what is not possible to say from that. It could have responded to a parasite. It is a general symptom of startling pain or discomfort in the fish, often.

I had similar issues with rainbowfish years ago. There were a couple of causes including a virus that got into their brain, made them freak out and then die. There was also a blood born protozoan that did the same thing. And I guess fish can suffer from strokes like people do, so there is always that possibilty.

Overcrowding was the main cause. I found by doing massive water changes and gravel cleans the problem didn't come back. But I did lose a lot of fish in the process.

Reducing stress and keeping the water in optimal condition should go a long way to preventing things like this happening. However, the stroke issue can't really be controlled that much. If the blood vessel pops, it pops.

Amazingly its still alive !!

When I posted first it had not moved for about 10 minutes and I assumed it was dead but I left it in the tank to give it a chance. Now it looks a bit pale and shaken up but its snuffling around again and even ate a bit

Wierd - its almost like a seizure

I heard of something similar. Cory would dash around the tank suddenly, banging into things, then freeze and lay on the bottom. As I remember it was a parasite. I would post in the emergency forum and ask Wilder. I think dhe id the one that came up eith the answer after she came back from vacation. Don't tarry. The Cory died.

The dashing around was the due to the parasite biting the fish.
