This is the second batch of eggs my bronze cories have layed. The first time, which was 24 hours after i added the pair or bronze cories, had about 90 eggs involved :S .

This time, i woke up as the laying was just finishing, and most of them had been eaten. I kept watching and they went into the T position again and layed more eggs after around half an hour of no eggs being layed :) So i now have 8 eggs in a net breeder. I know the eggs need good water flow over them, so instead of having an airstone in the net with the eggs, i put the net right infront of the spray bar. Will this be enough water current? Will the net slow down the water too much?

Last time no eggs were saved and were all eaten by my zebra danios

Anyway, i have around a 6 inch airstone in the other half of the tank, and i have a snaller airstone spare which i could attatch if need be. Should i aff the smaller one into the net breeder? And how? Should i just put the airstone below the net and not in it? Or would the air just roll off the net?

Anything else i should know? Ill probably be feeding liquid fry food (forgotten what its called) at first, and then move to bbs then bs and maybe the microworm things at some point. I dont know how big they are so if i see some in the LFS then ill get some at the appropriate time according to the fry growth rate.

Congrats on the spawn! I have just got my 6-group of bronze corys! I hope this spawn goes successfully for you. I sadly can't offer any additional information as I still need tips of spawning them myself before I can start conditioning my corys.

UPDATE: Day 3 and eggs have darkened a considerable amount. Ever so often, i can see one or two of the eggs seem to wobble as if the foetus are trying to get out :) One of the eight eggs have gone really white, so i am presuming that it has fungussed. It rolled around alot after it was white and thats when i thought it could be white because the fry has got out... I cant see any fry though it may be hiding. Im going to be feeding liquifry firstly and then (hopefully*) move up to microworms. Will microworms go through the net breeder? Or are they big enough to stay in with the fry?

* I say hopefully because my dad may not let me get them :S. Are there any other foods i can feed at that stage of the frys life that are around the same size as microworms or not?

Hi dobbygolem :)

Right now would be a good time to put some effort into getting your dad interested in fishkeeping as a hobby. You have some good corys that will breed for you and there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to raise them successfully with the right food and equipment. There's also a good chance, if you have an independently owned lfs near you, to sell or trade the fry for cash or other items you can use to support your hobby. Corys are a fish that is always in demand and when they are raised by hobbyists locally, they are a good deal for the lfs and for their customers who buy them.

I've only known one member who was successful in raising corys in a net and I'll send her a PM to see if she will help you with yours. :D

You mean raising cories in a net is hard? :S. I guessed it would be harder than out of a net, but from what you just said, it sounds like a mission :\. Is it because of restricted water flow? If so, i have my filter on full and the net is right infront of it, so i wouldnt think that the water flow would be a problem that much.

Hi dobbygolem :)

Wait until you see how tiny they are!

There are other factors involved too. If you had a 10 gallon tank to raise them in, for example, you would be able to let your corys spawn in there and then remove them. This would mean that you could have the entire batch to raise and even though many would die off along the way, since some are naturally weaker than others, you would still end up with a good number of them.

It's easier to keep a whole tank clean than it is a net. This might be the hardest part of the whole thing and the most important too.

I've already sent the PM to the member I mentioned, so let's wait and see what happens. :D

ok, thanks. Ill keep ontop of the cleanliness though. ;)

Can you tell me the name of the member you mentioned at all please?

Hi, I'm the one with the net :). Due to limited space in my room I adopted the net method. What kind of net are they in? Just the average fish net? I wouldn't worry about what position the airstone is in and depending on how fine the net is, there should be plenty water flow through it. I have a strong current in my tank, whats yours like? I found you couldn't really over feed them as what the babies don't eat, the adult cories and danios will if it falls through the net or not.

It's really easy to raise them this way. When my baby danios got too big for it I got a tank divider. The tank divider didnt work with the baby cories, they always managed to escape. I give the nets a wash in old tank water as algae likes to grow on them. I think its also great that the babis get to stay in the same water they were created in. :D

yeah, i like the idea of them being basically acclimatised well for definate by breeding them in your water. Its just a normal net as far as i know. Mine was called a "breeder net". it jsut hangs from the top and i just use the cover glass to keep it in place.

Thats strange though! ;) I have danios in my tank! Just like you! ;). The size of the one in the background of your photo - did it have anything wrong with it because mine has been that big for a while now, but only the two new ones that i got about 2 months ago. My first three are still the small size they were bought at. Does it just mean that they are female? Because i was told that they were probably just full of eggs, but i think 2 months and they would have givevn birth or i would have noticed the size go down if they scattered and then filled up again.

I was just getting a little worried about dropsy because they seem a little too fat for their own good :S :D

I bought my danios slightly smaller and skinny and the females gradually got fatter. If they (danios) are fat it usually means they are female and healthy. But sometimes it can mean an illness but mine are just fat. The males are slim though. I was nervous about releasing the cory babies as the danios are good feeders. When the babies dart about mid to top water they get chased but not eaten.

I use a net that you use for catching fish. I've placed it over the top of the tank so the rim of the net rests on the bulb and I bent the handle to balance.

My female zebra danios are the same way. Especially after feeding time.

Phew, I was worried for a bit about that.

UPDATE: Eggs hatched 2 days ago,a nd also got a surprise as whilst i was watching the remaining eggs wriggling and the fry getting out, (yes, i got to see it! :D ) the parents swam right in my line of view and layed a load of more eggs on the net right where i was watching the fry hatching! I just left these to get eaten, as i didnt fancy any mroe to raise  I went out and got some fry food for the fry and also got a brine shrimp hatcher kit. It took a while to set it all up, and has a bit of trouble with it all spilling over the floor (there goes one salt "rock") and the eggs going everywhere that were in the water  . Anyway, ive just got it all set up again and im waiting for them to hatch so i can feed <1day old BBS to my fry! :).

Congratulations on the fry  How many eggs did you say you had? How many hatched? Good luck B)

I think they all hatched + 2 which i hadnt seen and -1 for the one that fungussed... so around 9 fry should be there. I can only see around 3 at a time though!. they like to hide at the bottom where the plastic is so its hard to see exactly how many there are. :S

Do you think they will survive or not because of the net?

PS: When you have cories, and you treat for whitespot, do you have to half the dosage if cories are in the tank? Thanks. :)

The only reason i ask is that i got a net bristlenose catfish to replace the tank that jumped out of the water. :-( Anwyay, she seems to have a few white spots on her, although sometimes i look, see a spot or two, then she just moves slightly and it falls off because its sand! So im going to leave it for a while to see if any spots are there that definately arent sand before i treat and i might aswell ask now B)
