Apparently I thought it would be a fab idea to put a nearly full bucket of sand on the plastic brace bar of my tank. Needless to say it broke. Should I buy a new one from Juwel or should I try to fudge one of my own? Not terribly comfortable with the idea of leaving it without one altogether...

DIY it. So long as its as strong as the original structure or better.

What tank is it? If it's a Juwel or Fuval then I would find a strip of ABS plastic from the DIY store similar to the original stay, cut off the old one then (after making the area dry) superglue it in place.

The stay bar works on the principle of sheer strength so the area of gluing to the surround strip should be the maximum possible.

I'm not sure if that bar is really there for support, after finding out you can remove the trim and then looking into it more and finding people have used the tank without the upper trim for an open top tank I was a bit confused.

From what I read it's more necessary on the large tanks but I really don't have a clue on how true that is.

Anyway you can either bodge it or you can buy a new brace bar from... I'll try it find a site... they're about £10 but this place stocks a few.
