currently got a male had about 5 month now hes about 3.5" ish when i first got him he was always out but now he just sticks to the same plant 24/7 i was wondering if i got a female he would come out abit more? or wont this make a difference

It probably won't make any difference.

Of course, all fish are individuals and vary in their behaviour but, in general, BNs become a lot more reclusive as they grow, irrespective of sex.

My bristlenose was really reclusive in my 2 foot tank but since I've upgraded to a 4 foot he's out a lot more. I think they need more space than people realise. Also mine LOVES bogwood, might be worth getting some in the tank if you don't any already!

It may be the fact that most pleco's are nocturnal. He may seem to be staying in the same spot but at night he's probably zooming around the tank eating all the algae.

My pleco comes out at mealtime and when the lights are out.  He's 2 years old now, and while I don't see him much, I don't see any algae either... so he is doing his job.

In order to encourage plecos to come out, you have to make sure they feel comfortable. In order for them to feel comfy, provide lots of hiding places in the form of driftwood, stones and caves.

Curious how long it is until BNP start to grow their bristles?  I have one that is about 1.25 inches that has some great markings but I do not see any bristles forming so I am assuming female but was unsure how long it takes.
