Bristlenose Catfish

Hi new to this site but thought i would post about a situation i have just had with a bristlenose catfish.Ipurchased it over 3 weeks ago and when i released it into the tank it disapeared ,for 3 weeks not a sign of it searched the tank when i did water changes nothing thought it had died as it was only small. Then on sunday there it is on some rock ,and its out and about every single day going round the tank .Has anyone else had the same situation .plus im sure it has grown aswell.

Bristlenoses are fantastic at hiding, especially when they're still small Mine have never really been shy, but my friend went weeks without seeing her BN, just like you. He was probably just settling in - now he feels comfortable enough to be seen out in the open. BNs grow pretty quick, so you're probably right about it seeming larger

Thanks for your reply good to hear other peoples experiences ,its was really strange not seeing him but now hes not shy at all .only other thing because i thought i had lost him i went and paid £30 for a golden nugget plec .mind hes a nice fish to

I find when I have packs (yes packs of hungry growing out fry) they are every where, out scoffing all the food they can find but once they hit the 5-6cm mark they start hiding more and only coming out at night or when lights are out.
I gave a friend on of my young BN's and for ages she thought he had died, because she hadn't seen him. I kept assuring her that it was bound to be alive and well just doing what they do best, and sure enough he popped up again one night, larger and happy as Larry.

My Dad has a couple of BN's. They hid for quite a period and only ever seemed to come out to the front of the glass to feed when the lights were out. His are alot more out and about but one of his still would be more secretive. This I believe is quite normal. It all seems to very much depend on the BN they do appear to have very individual characters of their own.

I have a very young Long Finned Ancistrus which disappeared for near a week before I actually saw him/her Now, frequently I see it out and about attached either to bogwood, the leaves of the plants or t the sides of the tank.
Today my Sister bought me a Golden Ancistrus. Within three minutes it had attached itself to the front glass of the tank and then the bogwood. It seems to be much more forward than others.

Like I said it all seems to depend upon fish itself. It will settle down and come out of it's shell a little though. They don't like loud or too much noise too much, it's just a matter of time before it settles.
