Actually it is not uncommon for male bettas to wait until the actual spawning to make a nest. that is how my last spawning pair did it. I did notice however that the numbers of surviving eggs was noticeably smaller when done this way. I had around 50 fry, when my other pairs easily had 150-250 survivors.
