i bought a pair of swordtails yesterday and the female has a dark blue spot on her belly is this a gravid spot and should i put her in isolation.

somebody please help me its my first time having livebearers an i really want to breed them how do i know when she is ready.

What color is you swordtail? From my experience the gravid spot is usually black, but it is a possibility. Also, how big is your sword's belly. If it is huge, she is probably prego! If I were you, I would probably isolated your female. Not in one of those silly little breeder traps though! I would put her in her own 5 to 10 gallon tank with a sponge filter. If you have to put her in a breeder trap it is ok until she gives birth, but then you will need a tank for the fry that don't get eaten by the mother.

It sounds like a gravid spot and it probably is. Female livebearers like swordtails are just about always pregnant. The female will carry the developing young around for about 1 month before giving birth. Then usually at night she will release them. If there are lots of floating plants in the tank many of the fry will survive. It is preferable to keep the males & females apart except when you want to breed them. Males with often chase and harass the females and can stress them out. If you want a male in the tank then try to have 3 or more females per male.

i dunno whats huge it just looks like a big dark blue spot its my first time with swordtails i think its pregnant. it is silver almost transparent the fish. i have a ten gallon tank as well as the 60 gallon one that the swordtails are in but my breeding pair of angelfish are in that i have a net breeder but i dont like putting fish in it would it be ok to put her in with the angelfish if so should i put the male in aswell
