Breeding Stingrays

To breed motoros you will need at least two large tanks of 200 gallons or more, one for the deed to be done in and one to remove the male to when the mating is over, stingray breeding is very aggressive and males have been known to kill females.

Two females to each male is recomended and females should be substancially bigger than the male, then you just wait for nature to take its course.

I was getting close with my motoros but sadly lost my male when my fishroom heater blew a fuse and all the tanks got cold, the females were fine but the male just didnt pull through when the tank warmed up again. Until that point the male was trying to mate regularly and was beggining to get the female into the right position.

my male is constantly trying to mate wth my female im starting to feel sorry for her
she spends most of the time up the front glass avoiding his advances
she has bite marks round her disc by her tail
the sooner i get them in the big tank the better at least she will have more room to get away from him

u still not got that set up yet ?

must be a bit cramped in there?

yeah it is a bit
now i have a job at the lfs im wondering if they will let me use one of their empty sump tanks to hold some of my fish for a while
either way the big one will be set up very soon now

Female P.orbygini still reach about 16 inches so you still need two tanks with a 30" back to front width.

I understand that. I just thought that would be a good species. Has anybody used pool filter sand for their rays? I've used it before will cichlids for about a year and then with catfish for about 6 months and everything has been fine. The water quality and the fish were both fine but I thought it might be different with rays? Does anybody have any experience with this?

Thank you all who answered and I've found out that pool filter sand is save to use with rays on a just stingray forum. I'm not going to post th elink because its against the rules, but if you'd like it please PM me and I will gladly give it to you. I found a really good deal on reticulated stingrays, 8 for $200 + s&h. I'm going to wait like a month until I put my order in because I will be going on vacation for a week and the more time the tank gets to cycle the better. The filter has been running on a 55 gallon tank with cichlids since december 26th and hopefully next weekend we will gte the tank all set up. This summer we will extend our koi pond and rehome all of the koi and the turtle. The stingrays can then go in there for the summer and for the winter I will probably have a bigger tank than 180 gallons. Thanks for all of the help!
