Evening,

I have Parrot fish that i gained from my parents breeding pairs. I realise that parrot fish are meant to be sterile and unable to breed but my parents have two breeding pairs (which are breeding like crazy). The parents all started off with colour but lost the colour just after breeding. The fry have slight colour to them but are mainly just a light cream colour. This is quite annoying!!

Does anybody have any idea why i can't get the orange that you see on most parrots?? Are they dyed?

If anybody has any ideas please let me know!!

p.s. i found new fry in my tank so i have a breeding pair too!! woohoo

i see that you found the right place. these guys here are good so i wish you the best of luck. i still stand by what i said and that's the best i could help you with, my apologies :(

but i will post it here so people can build off of what i had said

edit:

a lot of parrots are dyed, no matter what kind they are. but i heard stories of parrot fish colors getting brighter when breedign and fading back to the normal color after they are finished.

or the paleness could just mean that they are stressed. breeding can be stressful on any species of fish as it can be on any other animal.

as for sterility of the parrots, some are some aren't. no one understands exactly why this is (or they know and i just havn't read anything on it yet). i mean males are supposed to be sterile in hybrids but increasingly more and more you hear that the males can breed easily and without any problems.

i hope i helped a bit, but i'm sure others in the hybrid section could help you more. good luck and i hope everything works out for you.

Thanks again for your help my friend!! :good:

The fry that they are having are all coming up white but they do have slight flashes of colour within their fins (some blue, some orange glints). I was also using a food which is meant to enhance the colour within your fish but it did help just a touch but never coloured the full fish!

Cheers

you're very welcome. i have a question for you. how big are the parrot fish? and do you know exactly what kind they are?

you say they have a pale cream color. i am thinking that they might be jellybean parrotfish. males in these tend to be very fertile and breeding is very common between the males and females. they also are very good at protecting their young and since the fry aren't showing color i am assuming this may be it.

jellybean parrots are very commonly dyed and their color does wash out. i had one dyed purple (this was before i knew what dyeing was in fish- i won't buy any died fish ever again since i now know the tortures on the fish). i thought it was the natural color and it turned a cream color when the dye wore out. the dye will leave the fish after a while so it could be this.

if not it was worth a shot, and i tried helping :D

It sounds like you have what are known as Jellybean parrots(balloon pink convicts). These are not sterile and breed like crazy.Do they look like this?

I will try to get a pic of them tomorrow morning when i get home from work and will try to post a pic of them. I didnt know there was different types of parrot fish!!! My parents just bought 4 from a pet shop in stirling which just sold them as "parrot fish". The larger fry i have are getting to about 2-3 inches long now (thats normal inches not men inches!!) so are still quite young!!

THATS THEM!!!!!

Thank you my friend!!!

I was beginning to worry that they were just defects!!

Thanks for all your help guys

if that's themthen you have absolutely nothing to woryabout. the breeding is quite natural and they are by no means sterile like we said above.

glad we could help. if you have any more question you can either post it or PM me (i don'tmind PMs and if i can't answer your question i can definately direct you to someone who can)

blood parrot female + convict male = jellybean.
jellybeans are smaller and can more resemble convicts, some are coloured like convicts depending on what type of convict the parent was. they are aggressive and not infertile. grow alot smaller than bps max for a male 6"

Thats not ever been proved.Plus my JB + BP produced no pink fry, all striped like a con or dull green with stripes.

ive witnessed the fry of a bloodparrot female and a male convict. they WERE jellybeans, just like in your pic. so it HAS therefore been proved.

People need to stop thinking they know everything.. what does it matter if they are jellybeans or balloon convicts or whatever one person thinks they might be..

Suuuuure you did, just like your fertile BP's ;)

Well I have a nice big male calico con I might try breeding with my BP or im sure I could find a big male pink con so i'll see if I can produce som JB's

You would think a JB + BP would be more likely to produce nice round pink JB's but my fry beg to differ

yes i did actually... but you dont have to believe me just inserting my opinion as all....
is there any surefire way to mate two seperate species of fish, because most of my hybrids were acidental and out of my control, but however if i was able to get 2 fish i wanted to mate, is there any surefire way of getting them to pair?
