Breeding Corys

Hi tetraman :)

Yes, the female is both longer and wider than the male. If you are looking at the C. paleatus, there is often a considerable difference in size between them.

best when your starting out to look at the from the top

females are wider behind the pectoral fins, than a male. The females look fat and the males look skinny.

Thats the easiest way

People say its better to get several females to one male, but I have bred them with one of each, but to be honest unless you are really sure when it comes to sexing, which even for those who are good at can take a while, its best to get a shoal.

I spent at leat an hour watching and examining the fish in the tank before I bought my two cories, and they turned out to be 1 male and one female, which is what I thought, but the spawn happened with the one I already had.

;)

the best thing yo do is as soon as you see the eggs, get them outta there, even some species of cory eat their own eggs, but bronze tend not to.
Put the eggs into a small hatching tank I use a 3 gallon, then when they start to look like cories, and no tadpoles I move them to a gallon tank (or I will when I get to this stage myself )

Hi tetraman :)

Please remember that corys need to be kept in schools. While one male and one female might be all it takes to actually spawn, they might not do as well as if there is a group of them together.

Also, since a full sized cory female can produce an awful lot of eggs, it's always a good idea to have more than one male in the tank. This will insure that a good percentage of the eggs are fertilized. :D

Hi tetraman :)

I can certainly understand that! :hyper:

The first thing you need to concentrate on is getting fish you like and keeping them healthy. Then, when they are mature, they will breed. Just enjoying them for themselves is an important part of the fun. :D

Not too sure about other Cory's but I would say start off with Albinos they seem to breed like rabbits, well the ones I had did anyway and I now have about 20 baby Cory's.

How ironic; our albino cory is called "Bunny"
