Breeding Corys

Hi tetraman :)

It's a lot harder to get a panda community successfully established than it is to breed them.

The females are a lot bigger than the males and it's easy to tell them apart. Here's a picture that will show you the difference in size:

Have you raised a batch of corys before? If not, I would strongly suggest you try breeding C. aeneus, bronze or albino, for starters. :D

Not too sure about other Cory's but I would say start off with Albinos they seem to breed like rabbits, well the ones I had did anyway and I now have about 20 baby Cory's.

Granted they don't look as nice as some of the other Cory's but Albinos are funny little things and definitely not ugly, but then I have to say that I seem to have a growing population of them.. :D

peppered are relativey easy, but go with bronze... if you want something fancy go for lazers I think they are a colour morph or bronze. but they are expensive.

I'm just going off what I've read, I've on bred bronze, until 3 days ago when my Trilineatus spawned, I can never seem to get the fry to survive though, hopefully will this time.

here hoping

I always recommend that beginning breeders begin with the bronze or albino C. aeneus because when mature, they spawn easily and often. C. paleatus (peppered corys) do too, but I have found them more likely to eat their own eggs. The C. aeneus are not as likely to do this.

/me pokes inchworm any light on my Trilineatus?

thanks :D

Hi §tudz :)

I don't know too much about them. I've had them for a long time, but they are in one of my cory community tanks and I don't think they ever spawned. :/

Edit: I just want to add that I know they will breed and can be raised in a home aquarium. Since that is the case, if there was anything out of the ordinary to do for them, I suspect someone would have written about it. So, as usual, I can say to feed the spawning group well on bloodworms and/or blackworms and if you get fry, keep their water clean and fresh. Mother Nature will help with the rest. ;)

OK. So, what do I have to do to successfully breed corys?

to get the to spawn pretty much nothing, feed them on a varied died or live food AND dried food, lower the temp with a water change when the female becomes laiden with eggs that it. basically just add water :D

Hi tetraman :)

Like §tudz said, if you have bronze or albino C. aeneus, or C. paleatus (peppered corys) it's probably going to happen sooner or later, whether they are in a community tank or in a species tank. The difference comes in the ease of hatching them and raising the fry. This is much easier to do in a species tank where you can simply remove the spawning group and clean up the tank.

The most important factor (aside from needing both males and females) is age. If they are not ready to breed, there is nothing you can do to hurry them along.
