As some of you know I just got set up a 10 gallon and put my female betta in it. She was looking weak and looked like she hadn't eaten in awhile from the main tank since the molly was pushing her out of the way at every feeding time. So I moved her to the spare 10 gallon I had outside.

So I have a male betta as well in the living room 10 gallon and since I love my little girl so much, and my boy (well he isn't really MINE he is more of a family pet) but I was thinking about breeding them. I've only bred mollies before...which I actually didn't BREED them because she was pregnant when I bought her, but I do have experience in raising and feeding fry and taking care of them and all that.

So what are some things I need to breed bettas? I am not 100% of doing it...not even 50% sure. I just want your opinions and stuff. I have no spare tanks to keep the babies in or even jars at that matter so I would have to pick something up. I would probably keep 2 or 3 of the offspring but then sell the rest most likely. Although I am afraid I might have to donate most of them to a LFS and all of my LFS keep their bettas in a small jar. :-(

I was thinking just dividing the 10 gallon in my room into two and put the female in one side and the male in the other with a black divider and then change it to clear and let each other see each other.

What do you think?

As far as I know they are both VTs which I know I SHOULDN'T breed but I really enjoy them both so much and want some offspring I can have when they pass. :*)

I am thinking twice though because I heard they can have 500+ and I don't want to contribute to putting all the males in tiny cups at the LFS.

I also have a 120 gallon I could keep a female betta community.

I wouldn't, just because they are VTs. It's good that you have looked into it and understand how many fry they can produce.

Basically what you would need if you get a quality pair of bettas is money. Betta breeding costs a lot -- that's where all my spare money has gone in the last little while.

I'd definitely think about it long and good and meanwhile do all the research possible looking into the links and information you can find here and on any search engine. Breedings seems to be a lot more time consuming than it seems and taking care of all those little fry is quite demanding, especially with the water changes, the feeding and all that jazz, not too mention having a place for them to grow out, then to be kept and if you're gonna sell/donate or whatever, you need those little beanie thingy majigs. So yeah. Really think about it, I mean, I know you're really attached to your bettas but do you think it's fair to breed them and just keep 2 or 3 because of who their parents were but to give/cull/sell the rest or have them die because of diseases or the people they were given to didn't take care of them?

Good luck with your decision
