I'm absolutely in love with Yura's colours and have never seen them before on any other fish. I would LOVE to breed him, but the only problem is that he's a veiltail...

Still, I was thinking about trying to carry his colours through to a different tail type... do you think it's possible? I figured I could breed him with a yellow plakat female, which would produce a spawn of all veils, and then breed two siblings from that spawn together, which if I'm correct would give me 25% plakats. I'd be keeping the spawns small by removing some eggs so I didn't end up with hundreds of unwanted veils, then either giving the veil fry that I didn't keep to friends, my very good LFS, or culling them.

Yura i still young (he has grown since I first got him) and his colours are surprisingly clean... no blue or redwash. He's also extremely healthy, so as far as that goes I think he's just about the best specimen of a veil anyone could ask for :p

Yeah, it's a wild notion, but Yura is my favourite and I would absolutely love to have some of his fry... Think I should, or is this just too crazy an idea to attempt? I don't mind being told I'm crazy  :S

By the way, this is the boy in question:

I will probably get stomped on here but...
gosh he's lush
I think he's worthy of breeding. :flex: Go for it.

EDIT: I've brought vt's because they are lusher than other tail types available!
some of the show quality one's I just don't like (in my own area) for colour or whatever...

his babies would look great...i dunno but you could breed him with a crwonie female?(sorry if im rong) -_-

I have yellows with similar coloring, But hey are not veils. Mine are yellow, with a pearly white/green iridescence on the body, and fins close to body. It doesn't show on my female, but does on the DT, and ST males. I was told they all came from the same spawn

If you were going to breed 1 of your veils, I'd vote for Zarobi. I have admired him for the 2 months or so that I have been around here. Do you have any more pics of him? He is yellow/green right? I have seen green/orange BI colors, (Not Veil) and was thinking of trying to breed for that, but don't know where to start.
I have an orange Female, and a Turq butterfly. I thought about trying that, but don't know what I'd get. Since orange is recessive, I'm sure I'd have work with the line a while.

Can I just say, he is absolutely GORGEOUS ! with stunning colouring (in my opinion of course ;) )
Good luck - I think he is most certainly worthy of breeding.

Wow, he is gorgeous!

I don't know anything about breeding, but his colors are beautiful!

Synn, as you know, color is a multi-loci thing with our betta buddies. You can't be sure you'll end up with any that have his coloring in the F2, but you'd likely have some that were similar.

That said, remember that the 25%, 50%, 25% ratio is simply a mendelian construct. Yes, statistically our of a large enough spawn, you would be likely to get approximately 25% plakats. However, in my last F2 (plakat/ superdelta grandparents), I didn't get a single plakat, except one female that might or might not be. 100% longtail males. The larger your spawn, the better the chance of getting plakats, but by larger I mean 300, 400, 500 fry. Anything much smaller then 100 and you're basically rolling the dice.

Although you probably already know this, your best breeder lady for him (if you want to pass on as much of his color as possible) would probably be an orange.

Yes, I know there's no guarantee of passing on his colour, but there's always a chance... and I think it may just be a chance worth taking.
As to the 1:2:1 ratio, it's not really a matter of how many plakats I get, it's the fact that we do know enough about betta genetics that I can say with confidence that if I keep trying, I will eventually get a plakat... a plakat which could carry on the line to future fish

ManyFISH4Me, thanks for the compliments on Zarobi, but I am sorry to say that he actually passed away during the night
He has never been healthy (Wal-Mart betta syndrome I like to call it... weak immune system) and has basically fought infection his entire life. Despite being given medication and frequent water changes, he just couldn't beat a bad case of body rot.
Needless to say, because of this, I would never have thought of breeding him in the first place... the only reason I would even consider it with Yura is that he seems to be unusually robust and healthy for a VT.

It sounds like you have a very well-reasoned and well-intentioned plan here, and I for one would not condemn you in any way for following through with the breeding of Yura. He's quite lovely, and you have done your research. Go right on ahead. :)

I am very sorry to hear about Zarobi. But, on the subject of yura, I did come across this---> http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auc...tasd&1116896809
He seems to have alot of them. Maybe he would sell you just a pair. Even has plakats. maybe You could send him a pic of yura, and have him pick the ones closest in color.
Hah, I saw those earlier today as well! I also saw this stunning little chap... I'll bet some of his spawn sisters would be a good match.
This isn't really just about getting that colouration though, or I'd buy a pair of similar plakats and start from there... It's like a project I want to see if I can pull off. Besides that, he's my little Yura and I'd like to see what his babies would look like
I'm not going to breed him until after I'm done trying to breed my Mini girl though, so there's no need to rush ahead of myself and buy a female yet...... unless of course I happen to see the PERFECT girl at the upcoming betta show
